The complete New Zealand model guide

Which Janome machine is right for you?

Janome’s range stretches from lightweight mechanical starters to air-threading overlockers, dedicated coverstitch and embroidery machines, professional flat-bed workhorses, an 18-inch longarm and the flagship Continental M17. This guide explains every machine model in the Direct Sewing Janome collection and, more importantly, what each step up changes in real sewing.

Use the comparison tables to build a shortlist, then read the model-by-model sections for the practical trade-offs. The best Janome is not automatically the machine with the most stitches—it is the one whose workspace, feeding, automation and specialist capability remove friction from the projects you make most.

How this guide was compiled: the live collection currently mixes machines with feet, needles, bobbins and software. We filtered out accessories and a duplicate ex-demo listing, leaving 38 distinct Janome machine models. Availability, regional packages and accessories can change; confirm the current New Zealand specification and warranty terms with Direct Sewing before purchasing.

The Janome range in five simple lanes

Mechanical sewing

Choose FD206, FD216, Sewist 709, Sewist 725S or MW3018 if you prefer visible dials, direct adjustment and no electronic menus. The higher models add buttonhole convenience, fabric-pressure adjustment and a heavier, more stable platform.

Computerised everyday sewing

DC and Sewist DC machines add electronic stitch selection, needle up/down, speed limiting and—on selected models—start/stop sewing, lettering, memory, an automatic thread cutter and a quilting table.

Overlocking and coverstitch

An overlocker trims and encloses seam allowances; a CoverPro forms professional stretch hems and chain stitch. These are companion machines, not replacements for an ordinary sewing machine.

Advanced quilting

Skyline, Horizon, Memory Craft and Continental models progressively add wider workspaces, 9mm stitches, AcuFeed Flex, automatic pivoting, HP piecing and A.S.R. stitch regulation.

Embroidery

Choose embroidery-only when a separate sewing machine already suits you, a combination machine when one workstation must do both, or the seven-needle MB-7E when colour changes and small-business throughput dominate.

Specialist production

HD9 QC is a high-speed straight-stitch specialist, Quilt Maker Pro 18 is a frame-mounted longarm, and Continental M17 is Janome’s flagship sewing, quilting and embroidery studio.

Complete Janome comparison tables

These figures describe the current Direct Sewing listings. A “workspace” figure is the clear area to the right of the needle, not the total machine width.

Janome technology explained in plain English

Superior Feed System

Janome’s multi-piece lower feed dogs increase contact with the fabric. Higher models use seven- or eight-piece systems to support smoother feeding across more of the presser-foot area.

AcuFeed Flex

A removable upper-feed system synchronises fabric movement above and below. It is useful for quilt layers, slippery cloth, checks, stripes and long seams where layer creep is visible.

HP foot and plate

The narrow professional-grade HP system concentrates control around a straight stitch for accurate piecing and precise topstitching. HP2 combines that narrow format with compatible dual feeding.

A.S.R. stitch regulation

The Accurate Stitch Regulator monitors free-motion movement and adjusts stitch formation to improve consistency. It helps, but does not replace practice with movement, posture and project support.

Automatic pivoting

On selected premium models, the foot lifts automatically when sewing stops with the needle down. Turn a corner or reposition appliqué without reaching for the presser-foot lever.

Embroidery field versus hoop package

The maximum supported field tells you the largest design area; included hoops tell you what can be stitched immediately. A smaller hoop is often more efficient and uses less stabiliser for names and motifs.

Remember: a walking foot, AcuFeed Flex and stitch regulation solve different problems. A walking or AcuFeed system controls layered feeding during normal sewing; stitch regulation manages stitch length while you move fabric freely.

Mechanical Janome sewing machines

Mechanical machines use dials and levers instead of digital menus. They are excellent for learning, repairs and garment construction, but the differences in foot pressure, buttonhole type, weight and stitch adjustment matter.

Starter mechanical

1. Janome FD206

Janome FD206 beginner mechanical sewing machine
A lightweight six-stitch introduction to Janome.
6 stitches830spm150mm space5kg

The FD206 concentrates on straight sewing, zigzag, finishing, blind hemming and a four-step buttonhole. A built-in needle threader, top-loading bobbin, drop feed and free arm remove common beginner frustrations, while the rigid internal frame keeps a small machine steady.

Choose it if: you need an approachable first machine for lessons, repairs and simple garments. Foot pressure is fixed and there is no speed slider, start/stop button or needle-down control; move up when those functions will be used every session.

Starter mechanical · More stitch choice

2. Janome FD216

Janome FD216 mechanical sewing machine
Simple dials with 16 stitches and stretch adjustment.
16 stitches830spm5mm width5kg

The FD216 keeps the compact FD platform but expands the stitch library to 16, adds stretch-stitch adjustment and provides dedicated length and width control for compatible patterns. The four-step buttonhole, needle threader, top-loading bobbin, free arm and drop feed remain.

Choose it if: you like the simplicity and portability of the FD206 but expect to sew stretch seams, decorative details and a broader mix of garments. Choose the Sewist 725S for adjustable foot pressure and a one-step buttonhole.

Traditional mechanical

3. Janome Sewist 709

Janome Sewist 709 mechanical sewing machine
Eight practical stitches with adjustable presser-foot pressure.
8 stitches4-step buttonhole830spm6.3kg

The Sewist 709 is deliberately straightforward: eight everyday stitch selections, a four-step buttonhole, 5mm maximum width, free arm, drop feed and adjustable presser-foot pressure. That pressure adjustment is valuable when moving between lightweight cloth and thicker assemblies.

Choose it if: you want traditional dial control and fabric-pressure adjustment but do not need the larger stitch library or automatic buttonhole of the 725S. It is a sensible repair, learning and everyday garment machine.

Mechanical all-rounder

4. Janome Sewist 725S

Janome Sewist 725S mechanical sewing machine
A strong long-term mechanical choice with a one-step buttonhole.
23 stitches1-step buttonhole4-level foot pressure6.6kg

The 725S is one of the most balanced mechanical options in the range. Its 23 stitches cover utility, stretch and decorative work, while the one-step buttonhole sizes from the supplied foot. Four foot-pressure levels, an extra-high lift, needle threader, hard cover and five feet support regular garment and household sewing.

Choose it if: you want a machine that remains mechanical but is less likely to feel limiting after the beginner stage. It is especially convincing for dressmaking, teaching environments and sewists who dislike digital interfaces.

Heavy mechanical workhorse

5. Janome MW3018 Limited Edition

Janome MW3018 Limited Edition mechanical sewing machine
A stable 8.3kg mechanical platform with seven feet.
18 stitches170mm space6.5mm width8.3kg

The MW3018 prioritises feel, stability and fabric control. It combines a rigid die-cast frame, adjustable foot pressure, Superior Plus feeding, variable needle positions, a one-step buttonhole and a useful 170mm opening. Seven feet and a hard cover create a particularly complete mechanical package.

Choose it if: you value direct controls but want a more substantial machine for frequent garments, bags, patchwork and home projects. It is heavier to carry than FD or Sewist models, but that weight becomes an advantage on the table.

Everyday computerised Janome sewing machines

Computerised selection provides repeatable settings and helpful control buttons. Pay particular attention to whether a model includes start/stop, a speed slider, adjustable foot pressure, an automatic cutter, lettering and an extension table.

First computerised machine

6. Janome DC1000

Janome DC1000 computerised sewing machine
Electronic stitch selection in a lightweight five-kilogram body.
30 stitchesLCD820spm5kg

The DC1000 introduces electronic width and length adjustment, needle up/down and an automatic lock stitch without creating a complicated interface. Its 30 stitches, memory buttonhole, drop feed and compact build cover classes, repairs, simple garments and crafts.

Know before buying: sewing is controlled through the foot pedal; this model does not have a separate speed slider or start/stop button. Choose the DC1030 if those two controls are important.

Beginner computerised control

7. Janome DC1030 Juno

Janome DC1030 Juno computerised sewing machine
Speed limiting and pedal-free sewing add useful control.
30 stitchesStart/stopSpeed slider5kg

The DC1030 builds on the DC1000 with a speed-control slider and start/stop sewing. Those functions make appliqué, curves, children’s supervised learning and consistent slow work easier. Needle up/down, automatic lock, a memory buttonhole, drop feed and LCD selection are also included.

Choose it if: you want a portable first computerised machine and prefer controlling speed at the machine instead of relying entirely on pedal pressure.

Portable quilting package

8. Janome DC2030

Janome DC2030 computerised sewing and quilting machine
The DC1030-style control set with a more quilting-ready bundle.
30 stitches158.5mm space820spm5kg

The DC2030 combines speed control, start/stop sewing, needle up/down and a memory buttonhole with an extension table, quarter-inch seam foot and even-feed foot. Those additions matter more for patchwork than adding dozens of decorative patterns.

Choose it if: you need a light class or retreat machine that can piece quilts immediately. The opening is still compact, so larger quilting becomes easier on a Skyline, Horizon or Continental.

Growing computerised all-rounder

9. Janome DC2150

Janome DC2150 computerised sewing machine
Seven-piece feeding and 7mm stitches broaden capability.
50 stitches3 buttonholes170mm space7mm width

The DC2150 moves onto a larger 7mm platform with seven-piece feeding, three automatic buttonholes and 170mm of workspace. Speed control, start/stop, needle down and automatic locking support accurate garment work and introductory quilting.

Choose it if: you have outgrown starter-level stitch choice but do not yet need an automatic thread cutter or included extension table. The DC6050 adds both, plus adjustable foot pressure.

Straightforward dressmaking

10. Janome Sewist 740DC

Janome Sewist 740DC computerised sewing machine
Clear direct controls with six levels of foot pressure.
40 stitches3 buttonholes170mm space5.9kg

The 740DC emphasises uncomplicated computerised sewing: direct stitch keys, three sensor buttonholes, seven-piece feeding and six levels of manual presser-foot pressure. The latter is a meaningful advantage for dressmakers moving between fine fabrics, stable wovens and layered seams.

Choose it if: you want electronic convenience and adjustable fabric control but do not require an automatic thread cutter, lettering or a very large decorative library.

Popular step-up machine

11. Janome DC6050

Janome DC6050 computerised sewing and quilting machine
Automatic cutting, adjustable pressure and a wide table in a portable body.
50 stitchesAuto cutter6-level pressure6.4kg

The DC6050 is a strong midpoint in the range. It adds an automatic upper-and-bobbin thread cutter, adjustable foot pressure and an extension table to the familiar 50-stitch, 7mm Janome platform. The result is faster repeated sewing and better support for patchwork and dressmaking.

Choose it if: you sew regularly and want genuinely useful automation without paying for alphabets, 9mm decorative stitches or a premium touchscreen.

Lettering and decorative sewing

12. Janome DM7200

Janome DM7200 computerised sewing and quilting machine
Two hundred stitches, an alphabet and combination memory.
200+ alphabet14 buttonholesAuto cutter820spm

The DM7200 adds a sewing alphabet, 14 one-step buttonholes and stitch-combination memory to a compact 7mm platform. Create labels, combine decorative stitches and save recurring sequences without moving into hoop embroidery.

Choose it if: decorative sewing, small sewn lettering and memory matter more than a larger physical opening. If quilting space is the priority, compare Skyline S3; if proper filled embroidery is required, start with MC1000 or 100E.

Feature-rich portable machine

13. Janome 5300QDC

Janome 5300QDC computerised sewing and quilting machine
Premium convenience in a format suited to classes and retreats.
300 stitches6 buttonholesAlphabetsKnee lift

The 5300QDC is designed for makers who want advanced functions without a large cabinet-sized machine. Its 300-stitch library includes alphabets and six one-step buttonholes, while the Superior Plus feed system, advanced needle threader, knee lift and quilting accessories improve practical control.

Choose it if: you travel to classes or retreats but still want a deep stitch library and premium handling. Choose Skyline when workspace and 9mm creative width become more important than portability.

Janome overlockers and coverstitch machines

An overlocker trims and wraps an edge while forming the seam; a coverstitch creates the stretchy parallel-needle hems seen on T-shirts and activewear. Many garment rooms eventually use an ordinary sewing machine, an overlocker and a coverstitch together.

Entry overlocker

14. Janome 8004D

Janome 8004D overlocker
A straightforward 3/4-thread route to professionally finished seams.
3/4 thread1,300spm9mm width8kg

The 8004D provides colour-coded conventional threading, differential feed, adjustable stitch length and width, 3/4-thread seams and rolled hemming. It is the accessible choice for T-shirts, dresses, children’s clothes and tidy woven seam allowances.

Choose it if: you want dependable core overlocking at the lowest entry point. It does not create cover hems and it does not air-thread; those are different upgrades.

Accessory-rich overlocker

15. Janome MyLock ML544D

Janome MyLock ML544D overlocker
Core four-thread performance with four bonus feet or attachments.
4 thread1,300spm9mm width8kg

The ML544D shares the fast, conventional-threading Janome overlock format but is packaged with four bonus feet or attachments. That makes it attractive when blind hemming, gathering, elastic work or other specialty finishes will be used rather than merely admired in the box.

Choose it if: the expanded accessory package aligns with your garments. Compare the Sailing Line machines for newer feeding and lower-looper refinements.

Sailing Line overlocker

16. Janome MyLock 454D

Janome MyLock 454D Sailing Line overlocker
Improved eight-piece feeding in a compact 3/4-thread model.
3/4 thread8-piece feed1,300spm6.1kg

The 454D introduces the smoother, quieter Sailing Line platform. An eight-piece feed system maintains fabric contact, the lower-looper mechanism simplifies conventional threading, and differential feed manages knits, gathering and wavy edges.

Choose it if: you want a modern, relatively light overlocker for frequent garments but do not require 2-thread techniques or air threading.

Sailing Line step-up

17. Janome MyLock 554D

Janome MyLock 554D Sailing Line overlocker
A refined four-thread overlocker for regular dressmaking.
4 thread8-piece feed1,300spm6.5kg

The 554D retains colour-coded conventional threading and easy lower-looper access while improving fabric movement through the eight-piece feed and textured Sailing Line foot. Stitch length reaches 5mm and the compact body remains easy to place in a domestic studio.

Choose it if: four-thread construction is your main workflow and you want a solid middle Sailing Line option. Step to 654D for 2-thread flexibility and a metal base.

Premium conventional overlocker

18. Janome MyLock 654D

Janome MyLock 654D Sailing Line overlocker
The broadest Sailing Line thread configuration and a stable metal base.
2/3/4 thread8-piece feed1,300spm7kg

The 654D is the premium conventional-threading Sailing Line model. Two-, three- and four-thread configurations expand decorative and lightweight finishing choices, while the metal base, adjustable pressure, eight-piece feeding and easy lower looper support steady high-speed sewing.

Choose it if: you want the strongest conventional-threaded Janome overlocker package. Choose AirThread 2000D if eliminating looper-threading friction is more valuable than the price difference.

Air-threading overlocker

19. Janome AirThread 2000D Professional

Janome AirThread 2000D Professional overlocker
One-push air threading removes the biggest overlocker setup barrier.
AirThread2/3/4 thread1,300spm7.7kg

The 2000D uses air to carry thread through both loopers, then adds a built-in needle threader, eight-piece feeding, differential feed and five pressure levels. Rapid setup makes switching thread colour or stitch configuration far less intimidating.

Choose it if: you overlock frequently, change colours often or have avoided an overlocker because of threading. It still does not create coverstitch hems; pair it with CoverPro 3000P for a premium garment studio.

Top coverstitch specialist

20. Janome CoverPro 3000 Professional

Janome CoverPro 3000 Professional coverstitch machine
Dedicated cover hems, top cover and chain stitch in a flat-bed format.
2–5 threads3 needles1,000spm143mm space

The CoverPro 3000P produces narrow and wide double cover hems, triple cover hems, chain stitch and built-in top cover stitching. Fine Mode improves control on fine or stretchy fabrics, while the open 143mm flat bed supports necklines, bindings and decorative work away from a raw edge.

Choose it if: knit garments, activewear and professional hems justify a dedicated machine. It does not trim fabric like an overlocker, so the two machine types complement rather than replace one another.

Advanced Janome sewing and quilting machines

This group ranges from the free-arm Skyline family to wide flat-bed Continental and professional machines. Choose by the physical project, not just stitch count: a 343mm opening, dual feed or stitch regulation may matter on every quilt.

Entry Skyline

21. Janome Skyline S3 Anniversary Edition

Janome Skyline S3 Anniversary Edition sewing machine
The first Skyline step adds meaningful space and a refined platform.
120 stitches210mm spaceAuto cutter9.5kg

The Skyline S3 offers more physical room than the compact DC range, plus 120 stitches, seven buttonholes, adjustable pressure, 71 needle positions, an automatic cutter and included extension table. Its 7mm maximum width keeps the interface approachable.

Choose it if: garments, bags and moderate quilting need more support and stability, but AcuFeed Flex and 9mm creative stitches are not essential.

Premium 9mm all-rounder

22. Janome Skyline S5 Anniversary Edition

Janome Skyline S5 Anniversary Edition sewing machine
Faster 9mm sewing with an even-feed foot and 11-foot package.
170 stitches210mm space1,000spm9mm width

The S5 expands to 9mm stitches and 91 needle positions, increases speed, and includes an even-feed foot, wide table and 11 sewing feet. Programmable thread cutting and adjustable pressure make it a capable garment, bag and quilting platform.

Choose it if: you want excellent general-purpose premium sewing but do not need the integrated AcuFeed Flex system of S6 or the colour touchscreen and automatic pivoting of S7.

AcuFeed Skyline

23. Janome Skyline S6 Anniversary Edition

Janome Skyline S6 Anniversary Edition sewing and quilting machine
AcuFeed Flex and automatic tension improve layered-fabric control.
196 stitchesAcuFeed FlexAuto tension1,000spm

The S6’s major upgrade is fabric management. AcuFeed Flex coordinates layers from above and below, while automatic tension supplies a strong starting setting. The 210mm opening, 9mm patterns, cutter, extension table and 11 feet round out the package.

Choose it if: quilts, checks, stripes, slippery fabrics and layered bags are regular work. Move to S7 when automatic pivoting, tapering, ruler work and touchscreen guidance will be used.

Advanced Skyline

24. Janome Skyline S7 Anniversary Edition

Janome Skyline S7 Anniversary Edition sewing machine
A five-inch touchscreen and automatic pivoting lead the Skyline range.
350 stitches5-inch screenPivoting1,060spm

The S7 adds a colour touchscreen, 350 stitches, automatic electronic foot pressure, pivoting, tapering, ruler-work compatibility and advanced stitch editing. AcuFeed Flex manages layered projects while the free arm keeps garment construction practical.

Choose it if: you want premium Horizon-style intelligence in the smaller 210mm Skyline body. Choose MC9410QC for 280mm of space or MC9480QCP for included stitch regulation.

Professional flat-bed

25. Janome Memory Craft 6700P

Janome Memory Craft 6700P professional sewing machine
An all-metal seamless flat bed built for speed and control.
255mm space1,200spm200 stitches3 plates

The 6700P combines professional flat-bed stability with computerised creativity. AcuFeed Flex, HP foot and plate technology, 91 needle positions, three needle plates and a heavy all-metal work surface support accurate piecing, topstitching and fast garment production.

Choose it if: you do not need a free arm and prefer a solid, fast table-level machine. Horizon and Continental models offer larger openings and more screen-led automation; HD9 is faster but straight-stitch only.

Large free-arm quilting

26. Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9410QC

Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9410QC sewing and quilting machine
280mm of room with a five-inch colour touchscreen and pivoting.
280mm space300 stitches5-inch screen1,060spm

The 9410QC gives larger quilts and décor projects 280mm of space while retaining a free arm. Automatic foot pressure, pivoting, ruler-work capability, 9mm stitches and the colour screen make setup and repeated tasks easier.

Choose it if: you want the Horizon platform and generous space but will use your own free-motion technique rather than paying for the A.S.R. package and AcuFeed upgrades of the 9480QCP.

Stitch-regulated Horizon

27. Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9480QCP Professional

Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9480QCP Professional quilting machine
A.S.R., AcuFeed Flex, Floating Mode and 25 feet define the premium package.
A.S.R.280mm space400 stitches25 feet

The 9480QCP is the advanced Horizon choice. The Accurate Stitch Regulator assists free-motion consistency, AcuFeed Flex controls layers, Floating Mode protects delicate surfaces and the remote cutter switch speeds hands-on quilting workflows.

Choose it if: you want premium quilting technology with a free arm and a body smaller than Continental. Compare M8 when maximum workspace and higher speed justify the larger flat-bed footprint.

Extra-wide Continental

28. Janome Continental M6

Janome Continental M6 sewing and quilting machine
A streamlined flat-bed platform with an enormous 343mm opening.
343mm space400 stitches7-inch screenFlat bed

The M6 is built around room: a 343 × 140mm opening and seamless flat bed support bulky quilts without the arm feeling cramped. A seven-inch touchscreen supplies recommended feet and settings across 400 stitches, while a broad table extends support.

Choose it if: workspace is the priority and you want a sophisticated Continental without paying for every M8 quilting system. AcuFeed Flex is an optional upgrade on this configuration, so compare the complete packages carefully.

Flagship quilting

29. Janome Continental M8 Professional

Janome Continental M8 Professional sewing and quilting machine
Flagship space, AcuFeed Flex and A.S.R. without an embroidery system.
343mm space1,300spm450 stitchesA.S.R.

The M8 combines the largest sewing opening in this guide with A.S.R. stitch regulation, AcuFeed Flex, automatic pressure, HP/HP2 precision systems and a seven-inch touchscreen. At 17.4kg it is intended for a stable, permanent sewing surface.

Choose it if: large quilts are your main work and you want Janome’s premium sewing technology without embroidery. Choose M17 only when hoop embroidery is part of the plan.

Straight-stitch production specialist

30. Janome HD9 QC Professional

Janome HD9 QC Professional straight stitch sewing machine
One exceptional straight stitch at up to 1,650 stitches per minute.
1 stitch1,650spm229mm space14.5kg

The HD9 is a dedicated high-speed straight-stitch machine with a large metal bobbin, automatic cutter, knee lift and strong, stable construction. It is designed for piecing, bags, topstitching, garments and production-style straight sewing.

Choose it if: speed, penetration and straight-stitch quality matter more than zigzag, buttonholes or decorative stitches. Keep another machine for those functions.

Frame-mounted longarm

31. Janome Quilt Maker Pro 18

Janome Quilt Maker Pro 18 longarm quilting machine and frame
An 18-inch longarm with configurable frame and stitch regulation.
18-inch throat2,200spm4/8/12ft framesRegulated

The Quilt Maker Pro 18 changes the entire quilting method: the machine moves across a quilt loaded onto a frame. Adjustable handlebars, digital tension, an independent bobbin winder, bright lighting and stitch-regulated or manual modes support edge-to-edge and free-motion work.

Choose it if: quilting the quilt—not piecing or general sewing—is the dedicated goal and you have measured space for the selected frame. A longarm is a studio system, not a substitute for an ordinary sewing machine.

Plan before purchase: confirm the 4-, 8- or 12-foot frame configuration, room clearance, delivery, installation and training with Direct Sewing.

Janome embroidery and combination machines

Embroidery-only machines can stitch while your main machine remains available. Combination models save space and offer one integrated workflow. Multi-needle changes the workflow again by keeping several colours threaded and ready.

Compact embroidery-only

32. Janome Memory Craft 100E

Janome Memory Craft 100E embroidery machine
A compact dedicated embroidery machine with 274 designs.
140 × 140mm274 designs660spm3.5-inch screen

The 100E is dedicated to embroidery. It imports compatible designs by USB, edits them on the colour screen and uses a built-in swing-out arm that also supports optional free-arm hoops. The 140mm square field is generous for names, motifs, quilt blocks and gifts without requiring a huge room.

Choose it if: your sewing machine already suits you and you want an independent embroidery station. Choose 400E or 550E when design dimensions regularly exceed 140mm.

Compact all-in-one

33. Janome Memory Craft 1000

Janome Memory Craft 1000 sewing and embroidery machine
Sewing, quilting and 140mm-square embroidery in one compact body.
300 sewing stitches241 designs140 × 140mm3.5-inch screen

The MC1000 combines a full 7mm sewing machine with a built-in swing-out embroidery arm. There are 300 sewing stitches, 12 buttonholes, 241 embroidery designs, on-screen editing and optional free-arm hoops. No separate embroidery unit needs to be stored.

Choose it if: one compact machine must handle garments, quilting and personalisation. The trade-off is that sewing pauses while embroidery is running, and the maximum field is smaller than dedicated 400E or 550E models.

Medium-format embroidery-only

34. Janome Memory Craft 400E

Janome Memory Craft 400E embroidery machine
A 200mm square field for larger motifs and quilt blocks.
200 × 200mm160 designs6 fontsUSB

The embroidery-only 400E doubles down on a practical square field. Import designs by USB, combine and edit on screen, create monograms and use the 200 × 200mm hoop for jacket backs, cushion centres, quilt blocks and larger compositions.

Choose it if: a 140mm field feels restrictive but the extra-long 360mm field and four-hoop package of the 550E LE are unnecessary.

Large embroidery-only

200 × 360mm180 designs4 hoops860spm

The 550E LE extends embroidery to 360mm in length and supplies four hoops plus a wide table. Six fonts, automatic tension, on-screen editing and USB importing support large names, borders, jacket backs, home décor and joined design work.

Choose it if: embroidery is a major discipline and you want a large dedicated single-needle machine while keeping your sewing machine free. Confirm the exact current Limited Edition connectivity and accessory package, as regional editions can differ.

Skyline sewing + embroidery

36. Janome Skyline S9

Janome Skyline S9 sewing and embroidery machine
AcuFeed sewing and WiFi-connected embroidery share one free-arm platform.
300 sewing stitches250 designs170 × 200mmWiFi

The S9 is the embroidery-capable flagship of the Skyline body. It combines 9mm sewing, AcuFeed Flex, adjustable pressure, 300 stitches and 16 fonts with 250 embroidery designs, WiFi/app connectivity and a 170 × 200mm field.

Choose it if: you need premium sewing and medium-format embroidery in one machine but do not have the room or budget for Continental M17. Choose a separate embroidery-only machine if simultaneous sewing and embroidery will improve productivity.

Flagship creative studio

37. Janome Continental M17 Professional

Janome Continental M17 Professional sewing quilting and embroidery machine
Janome’s flagship combines Continental quilting space with 460mm embroidery.
343mm sewing space280 × 460mm1,230 designs850 stitches

The M17 brings top-tier sewing, quilting and embroidery into one large platform. A.S.R., AcuFeed Flex Plus, HP systems, intelligent feeding and automatic fabric-thickness sensing support sewing; dual screens, five supplied hoops, 1,230 designs and up to 1,200 embroidery stitches per minute support large-format embroidery.

Choose it if: you want Janome’s fullest integrated workflow and have a strong table with clearance for the machine’s 280 × 460mm hoop travel. It is a premium domestic single-needle system, not a seven-needle production machine.

A demonstration is strongly recommended: compare screen workflow, hoop sizes, A.S.R., AcuFeed feet, software, physical clearance and project support before committing.

Seven-needle embroidery

38. Janome MB-7E

Janome MB-7E seven needle embroidery machine
Seven colours can remain threaded for faster multi-colour production.
7 needles240 × 200mm800spm23kg

The MB-7E is a different category from domestic single-needle embroidery. Seven needles keep seven colours loaded, reducing manual rethreading between colour blocks. It supports JEF, JEF+ and DST formats, includes 50 designs and ten fonts, and uses an open embroidery area suited to many specialist hoops.

Choose it if: repeated logos, names, uniforms, gifts or small-business work make colour-change efficiency valuable. Budget separately for digitising, hoop selection, stabiliser, thread inventory, maintenance and production testing.

Discuss the whole workflow: machine capacity is only one part of embroidery production. Ask Direct Sewing about training, file preparation, cap or specialist hoops, thread, stabilising and servicing.

How to choose your Janome in six steps

  1. Start with the machine type. Conventional sewing, overlocking, coverstitch, hoop embroidery and longarm quilting are different jobs.
  2. List the projects you make repeatedly. Regular garments, bags, king-size quilts, monograms and activewear place different demands on feeding and space.
  3. Measure the project and the room. Check workspace to the right of the needle, table footprint and embroidery or frame travel—not only the machine body.
  4. Rank automation by frequency. Speed control, automatic cutting, pivoting, air threading and stitch regulation earn their value through repeated use.
  5. Compare the included package. Extension tables, feed systems, needle plates, hoops and presser feet can materially change the usable value.
  6. Test the interface and fabric. Take representative samples to a demonstration and sew the seams, layers and thread types that matter to you.

Janome sewing machine FAQs

Which Janome is best for a complete beginner?

FD206 is the simplest mechanical starting point. FD216 adds more stitch choice, while DC1030 is excellent when speed limiting, start/stop and needle-down control will build confidence.

Mechanical or computerised Janome?

Choose mechanical for direct dials, simplicity and easy visual adjustment. Choose computerised for repeatable electronic settings, needle control, speed limiting, memory and automation. Neither type is automatically stronger simply because of its control system.

What is the difference between DC1000, DC1030 and DC2030?

All use a compact 30-stitch platform. DC1000 relies on the pedal and omits a speed slider. DC1030 adds start/stop and speed control. DC2030 packages similar computerised control with quilting accessories including a table and even-feed foot.

DC6050 or DM7200?

Both are compact 7mm computerised machines with an automatic cutter and table. DM7200 expands to 200 stitches, alphabet lettering, 14 buttonholes and combination memory. DC6050 is the simpler value choice when those creative functions are unnecessary.

What is Janome AcuFeed Flex?

It is a removable upper-feed system that works with the lower feed dogs to coordinate fabric layers. It is particularly useful for quilts, long seams, slippery cloth and matching stripes or checks.

Skyline S5, S6 or S7?

S5 provides fast 9mm sewing and an even-feed package. S6 adds integrated AcuFeed Flex and automatic tension. S7 adds a five-inch colour screen, automatic foot pressure and pivoting, tapering, ruler work and more advanced editing.

Memory Craft 9410QC or 9480QCP?

Both provide 280mm workspace and premium screen-led sewing. The 9480QCP adds A.S.R. stitch regulation, AcuFeed Flex, Floating Mode, more stitches and a larger 25-foot package.

Continental M6 or M8?

Both centre on a huge 343mm flat-bed workspace. M6 is the streamlined space-first option. M8 adds faster sewing, A.S.R. stitch regulation, AcuFeed Flex, automatic pressure and a deeper premium quilting package.

Does an overlocker replace a sewing machine?

No. An overlocker excels at trimming, seaming and enclosing raw edges, especially on knits. You still need a conventional machine for zips, most buttonholes, topstitching, understitching and many construction steps.

Does a coverstitch replace an overlocker?

No. A coverstitch makes stretch hems, chain stitch and selected binding or decorative finishes. It normally does not trim and enclose a raw edge as an overlocker does.

Is air threading worth it?

It is most valuable when threading difficulty prevents you from using the overlocker, when colours change frequently or when physical dexterity and visibility make conventional looper paths frustrating.

Embroidery-only or a sewing-and-embroidery combination?

Embroidery-only lets you keep sewing while the design runs and avoids duplicating sewing features. A combination model saves space and provides one integrated interface. Choose according to room, workflow and the quality of your existing sewing machine.

Memory Craft 100E or 400E?

100E is compact, includes 274 designs and supports a 140mm square field. 400E expands the maximum field to 200mm square, useful for larger motifs, quilt blocks and home décor.

Memory Craft 550E LE or Skyline S9?

550E LE is an embroidery-only specialist with a larger 200 × 360mm field and four hoops. S9 combines premium sewing and 170 × 200mm embroidery in one free-arm machine with WiFi and AcuFeed.

Continental M17 or MB-7E?

M17 is a flagship single-needle all-in-one for sewing, regulated quilting and large embroidery. MB-7E is embroidery-only and keeps seven colours threaded for faster repeated colour changes. Their workflows are fundamentally different.

Is the HD9 QC a heavy-duty beginner machine?

No. It is a focused professional-style straight-stitch flat-bed machine. It does not zigzag or make buttonholes, so it is normally an additional specialist machine for experienced high-volume sewing.

Who needs a longarm quilting machine?

A longarm suits quilters who want to move the machine across a quilt loaded on a frame. It requires dedicated floor space, practice and a workflow quite different from pushing a quilt through a domestic machine.

Why buy from an authorised New Zealand Janome dealer?

A specialist dealer can confirm the regional package and warranty, demonstrate the machine, match feet and hoops, provide setup support and service the machine after purchase.

Why the dealer relationship matters

A machine may remain in your creative life for many years. The useful purchase therefore includes more than a specification sheet: it includes help choosing needles, feet, hoops, stabiliser and thread; guidance through setup; and access to servicing when the machine eventually needs attention.

Direct Sewing has an Auckland showroom and technical workshop at 138 Railside Avenue, Henderson, and supplies customers nationwide. Bring fabric samples and a shortlist when possible—the most revealing comparison is often the way two machines feed, sound and respond on your actual project.

Choose the machine that removes your real sewing bottleneck

FD and Sewist models make everyday sewing approachable. DC machines add control and automation. Skyline opens more room and creative range. Horizon and Continental bring premium quilting technology. MyLock, AirThread and CoverPro finish garments professionally. Memory Craft and MB-7E personalise through embroidery, while HD9 and Quilt Maker Pro focus on specialist production.

Start with what you make most often, identify the repeated task that slows you down, and invest in the feature that changes that task. If your shortlist remains close, talk to the Direct Sewing team about your fabrics, project size, workspace and experience.
