What belongs in an everyday knitting toolkit?

Start with stitch markers, a tape measure or gauge ruler, yarn needles, small scissors and a way to hold live stitches. Add a row counter for repeats and shaping. Prefer a ready-made selection? Markers, holders or point protectors?

Markers identify a place in your work; choose a ring size that fits your needle, or a removable locking marker for marking a stitch. Holders and stitch-holder cords keep live stitches aside while you work elsewhere. Point protectors and stitch stoppers help secure work on needle tips. Cable-stitch needles hold stitches during a cable crossing; they are not interchangeable knitting cables.

Will a replacement cable fit my needles?

Match the needle system, joining size and required length before buying. ChiaoGoo uses MINI [M], Small [S] and Large [L] connections; they are not all directly interchangeable. Check any adapter’s stated direction and the product’s compatibility details. With KnitPro, Prym and ChiaoGoo listings, also check whether the quoted length is the cable alone or the finished circular needle length. Ask us with your needle model if you are unsure.

Which blocking tools do I need?

Blocking mats provide a pinning surface; T-pins or knit blockers secure the work. Wires help shape long edges and lace, while sock blockers provide a shaped form for suitable socks. Use the method allowed by your yarn’s care instructions, check your swatch first and shape to the pattern’s measurements without overstretching.

Yarn winder or yarn holder?

A ball winder rewinds yarn into a manageable cake. A yarn holder supports the ball as you work; a yarn scale helps measure what remains. These serve different jobs. For colourwork, the Prym yarn-guide thimble helps keep strands separated.

Finish, store and care for handmade pieces

Use large-eye wool needles for weaving in ends and joining suitable yarn pieces, and a repair hook for picking up dropped stitches. Keep small notions together in a pouch and protect larger work in a project bag. For washable knits, Soak delicates wash is one care option: follow the yarn label and product directions, test colourfastness and dry flat where instructed.
