Questions before your first purchase

Is a computerised machine harder to learn?

It depends on the controls you prefer. The TM30 lets you limit the maximum speed, which can help while learning. The GS2510 and SINGER 4423 use visible dials and foot-pedal speed control. Choose the controls you feel comfortable using.

Do I need a machine with hundreds of stitches?

For many first projects, straight stitch, zigzag and a suitable buttonhole matter more than a large decorative stitch collection. Consider speed control, threading and the projects you plan to make.

Can these machines sew jeans or bags?

Suitability depends on the fabric, needle and total seam thickness. The SINGER 4423 is worth considering for suitable denim, canvas and varied home projects. Check the selected machine’s product details for fabric guidance, and use a needle and thread suited to your project.

Do I need an overlocker first?

A standard sewing machine handles construction, zips, buttonholes and topstitching. An overlocker trims and finishes edges and is usually a later addition. Begin with the machine suited to the sewing tasks you need most.
