Choosing Sulky thread and embroidery support
Choose thread for the stitch: Sulky Cotton 30wt comes in solid and variegated 450m spools, with a fuller cotton stitch line for quilting and decorative work. Match the needle and machine settings to the selected thread and test on the project layers; a changing colour sequence can look different with stitch length and design.
Backing below the fabric: Tear Away Plus supports stitching before excess backing is torn away. Super Strong is a heavy cut-away backing that remains under the design after trimming. Filmoplast is self-adhesive tear-away for holding awkward-to-hoop pieces; its adhesive is applied with finger pressure, rather than an iron.
Topping and wash-away film: Lightweight Solvy sits on textured fabric to help prevent stitches sinking into the surface; it does not automatically replace backing underneath. Ultra Solvy is a heavier water-soluble film for suitable designs, including work specifically designed to hold together without base fabric. Check that the project can be rinsed or soaked as directed.
Heat-removable or permanently bonded? Thermofilm is removed with a dry iron on compatible heat-tolerant materials; follow its no-steam directions. Thermofix is a permanent fusible adhesive web for bonding appliqués and patches. These are different materials. Tender Touch is an iron-on comfort layer for the reverse of embroidery, rather than a replacement for the chosen stitching support.
Compare format and test together: Read the current width, length, colour and removal method on each listing. The sample starter kit helps compare materials before choosing a roll. Test fabric, thread, stabiliser and design together, including the required water or heat treatment.
