How to choose thread
Match the project
Start with the fabric and use: everyday sewing, stretch, denim, quilting, embroidery, upholstery or outdoor work.
Match the weight
A finer number gives a finer thread; a lower ticket or number generally means a heavier thread. Match needle, tension and machine guidance.
Match colour and length
Use the closest shade for concealed seams, a contrast for topstitching, and a spool length that suits your workload.
Shop trusted thread brands
We stock proven brands selected for consistency, colour range and dependable machine performance.
Thread buying questions
What is the best all-purpose sewing thread?
For most domestic sewing, a quality polyester all-purpose thread such as Gütermann Sew-All is a dependable starting point. Choose a specialist range when the project needs stretch, extra strength, embroidery shine or outdoor durability.
Which thread is best for jeans and topstitching?
Choose a heavier topstitch thread such as Gütermann Top Stitch, Mara 70 or an AMANN Saba 30 jeans thread, then pair it with the recommended needle and adjust tension for a clean, even finish.
What thread should I use in an overlocker?
Use overlocker-specific cones with consistent unwind and a weight suited to your fabric. Madeira Aerolock, Coats Moon and other overlocker ranges are easy starting points.
Can I get help choosing a thread?
Yes. If you are unsure, send us the fabric, machine and project details. Our New Zealand team can point you to the right fibre, size and spool length.
