Choosing outdoor thread: UV, sizing & machine capacity
Start with exposure, not just thread thickness
A thread can be strong indoors without being the right choice for constant sun and weather. Dabond, Sunstop and Outdoor-Pro are purpose-focused outdoor ranges. Anefil Poly is another polyester option for suitable outdoor work, but its construction and available finishes should not be assumed identical to Sunstop. Match the exact listing to your exposure requirements.
Domestic spool or industrial cone?
Gütermann Outdoor 40 is the smaller-spool option to consider for suitable domestic machines, subject to their needle and thread limits. The heavier industrial cones require compatible industrial equipment and setup. A thicker thread is not automatically a better seam if the machine cannot form a balanced stitch with it.
Compare size and finish carefully
V, Tex and ticket numbers are different naming systems; do not compare them as if they were one scale. Check the manufacturer's size, recommended needle range, bonding and finish for the exact product. Where a water-repellent or non-wick finish matters, confirm that it applies to the supplied version rather than another product in the same family.
A durable thread does not make a waterproof product
Fabric, needle holes, seam design, reinforcement and sealing all affect the finished result. Test the complete construction and follow the material supplier's requirements. For primarily indoor furniture and leatherwork, compare upholstery thread. Pair heavy thread with the correct industrial needles and a machine suited to the work.
