If you can knit and purl, a guided sock pattern helps you learn the shaping one step at a time.

  • Start here: Winwick Mum's free Basic 4ply Socks pattern & tutorials ↗. This independent designer's guide covers the setup, heel and toe. Opens on Winwick Mum's website.
  • Choose yarn: Crucci 4 Ply Sock Yarn offers solids and multicolours in a 75% superwash merino / 25% nylon blend. Check the pattern's metreage for your size.
  • Choose one method: Symfonie 2 DPNs supply five needles in one selected diameter. For magic loop where 2.5mm gives your required gauge, choose the Prym 2.5mm circular in 80cm.
  • Have ready: a stitch marker, blunt yarn needle, scissors and tape measure. Swatch and check fit before committing to the pair.

Choose a new colour story

Keep the pattern and needles you enjoy, then explore a different palette. These three yarns are 4 ply merino-nylon blends; compare length as well as weight.

  • Crucci Sock Yarn — approximately 400m per 100g ball, with solid and multicolour choices.
  • Broadway Hand-Dyed Sock Yarn — approximately 357m per 100g skein, with expressive hand-dyed colourways.
  • Malabrigo Ultimate Sock — approximately 385m per 100g hank, with tonal and variegated colours.
  • Before reordering: record your shade, quantity and needle size. Hand-dyed colour placement varies; buy enough together and wind hanks before use.

Use KnitPro Mio locking markers to mark shaping or positions as your pattern directs. Choose a blunt wool needle that passes comfortably through your stitches for finishing and weaving in ends. Keep your yarn labels and a little leftover yarn for future repairs.

Which needles do I need to knit socks?

Choose the diameter that gives the washed gauge in your pattern, then the needle style for your method. DPNs divide the stitches across several needles. Magic loop uses a long flexible circular needle; the linked Prym option is 2.5mm and 80cm overall. A short circular uses a different setup and may need another method for small heel or toe sections. Follow the pattern's instructions.

Is one ball enough for a pair of socks?

Check the pattern's total metreage for the intended size and leg length, allowing for swatching and changes. The yarns here vary from approximately 357m to 400m per 100g. Larger feet, taller cuffs, textured stitches and colour matching can need extra yarn.

Do I need sock blockers?

They are optional finishing tools, not a requirement for learning to knit socks. Use them when the yarn and pattern suit wet shaping. They support the finished shape; they do not correct the wrong gauge or permanently resize a sock.

How do I choose between these sock yarns?

Start with the pattern's yarn weight and care needs. Crucci, Broadway and Malabrigo Ultimate Sock here all combine 75% superwash merino with 25% nylon. Compare metres per ball or hank, colour effects and the actual care label. A new yarn still needs a tension check, even if it is also labelled 4 ply.
