How to choose an embroidery stabiliser
Match the backing to your fabric and design
- Tear-away: removable support for stable woven fabrics and many cap embroidery projects.
- Cut-away: lasting support for stretch fabrics, knits and designs that need backing after stitching.
- Wash-away: water-soluble backing or topping. Check the product: a light topping helps keep stitches above textured fabric; it may still need backing underneath.
- Heat-away: film removed with heat. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and check that your fabric can tolerate the required temperature.
- Self-adhesive and iron-on: ways to hold fabric in place. Check whether the stabiliser itself tears, cuts or washes away.
Small projects or bulk embroidery?
Choose pre-cut sheets for quick hoop preparation, small rolls for everyday projects, or sampler kits to try different stabilisers. For regular production, compare 25m Sulky rolls and 1m × 100m backing rolls. Sizes are shown as width × length; also compare the weight, colour and removal method.
