Madeira setup guide for New Zealand makers

Choose the thread, needle, stabiliser and tools as one system

A beautiful Madeira colour is only the beginning. The best result comes from matching the thread to the machine, fabric, stitch and finish—then supporting it with the right needle, stabiliser and precision tools.

The 30-second answer

Which Madeira thread should I use?

Start with the job—not the colour

Choose Polyneon 40 for hard-wearing machine embroidery, Rayon 40 for maximum lustre, AeroQuilt 40 for quilting, Aerolock 125 for strong overlocked seams, and Aeroflock in overlocker or coverstitch loopers when you want a soft, fluffy finish. Metallic and special-effect threads need their own setup; use the chart below as your starting point, then stitch a sample with the actual project materials.

Your project or priority Start with Needle / machine position Why
Everyday garment and general sewing Madeira Aerofil Fresh universal needle sized for the fabric Smooth all-purpose construction thread for ordinary seams.
Machine embroidery that will be worn or washed Polyneon 40 Embroidery needle; commonly NM 65/9–75/11 Strong polyester with brilliant colour and dependable high-speed performance.
High-lustre decorative embroidery Rayon 40 Embroidery needle; commonly NM 65/9–75/11 Soft viscose thread with a rich, light-catching sheen.
Machine, free-motion or longarm quilting AeroQuilt 40 Quilting needle 9454, size to suit the quilt sandwich Strong, low-lint core-spun polyester with a cotton-like appearance.
Standard overlocked or coverstitched seams Aerolock 125 Needle and looper paths; use the machine’s specified needles Durable core-spun thread for strong, balanced seams.
Soft stretch seams, rolled hems or fuller edge coverage Aeroflock No. 100 Primarily the looper paths Fluffy textured polyester adds softness, elasticity and volume.
Metallic embroidery, lettering or decorative accents Madeira Metallic 40 or GoldenSilver Metallic needle 9451, NM 90/14 The larger eye reduces abrasion on the metallic surface.
Temporary machine-basted seams Wash Away 9660 Use as temporary thread, not as stabiliser The 100% PVA thread dissolves in water after the work is complete.
Heat-activated puckering and dimensional texture Smocking 9662 In the bobbin; normal thread in the needle Steam contracts the bobbin thread after stitching.
Extra recovery in knitted cuffs and ribbing Elastic 9800B No machine needle—carry alongside knitting or crochet yarn Transparent elastane quietly reinforces selected knitted rows.

Important: needle sizes are practical starting points. Fabric weight, design density, machine model and thread path can change the best setup. Follow the machine manual and sample first.

The principle that prevents most problems

Treat every stitch as a four-part system

Thread cannot compensate for the wrong needle, poor stabilisation or settings that do not suit the fabric. Make these four decisions together.

1

Thread

Choose the fibre, weight and surface for the job: strength, lustre, softness, matte coverage or special effect.

2

Needle

Match the point and eye to the fabric and thread. A fresh, correct needle is often the cheapest fix in the room.

3

Stabiliser

Control movement during stitching and plan what should remain, tear away, wash away or release afterward.

4

Settings

Test tension, speed, stitch density, hooping, presser pressure and differential feed on the real materials.

Thread-number shortcut: in common embroidery thread numbering, a larger number generally indicates a finer thread, so No. 60 is finer than No. 40. Numbering systems vary, so use the manufacturer’s specification when changing thread families.

Machine embroidery

Polyneon or Rayon? Choose by the life of the finished piece

Both are premium Madeira embroidery threads. The useful question is not “which is better?” but “what will this embroidery need to survive, and how should it look?”

Choose for durability

Polyneon 40

  • 100% polyester machine embroidery thread
  • Strong at embroidery-machine speeds
  • Suited to garments, uniforms, towels, bags and frequently laundered items
  • Brilliant colour with practical wash and wear performance
Choose for lustre

Rayon 40

  • Viscose embroidery thread with a smooth hand
  • Excellent light reflection and a rich decorative sheen
  • Beautiful for monograms, heirloom work, gifts and display pieces
  • Choose when appearance leads and the care demands are appropriate
Madeira Rayon 40 clear box with eighteen colourful 200 metre embroidery thread spools
Rayon 40 Clear Box 8040: an 18-colour high-lustre embroidery assortment.
Quick choice: embroidering a child’s hoodie, work shirt or towel? Begin with Polyneon. Creating a framed monogram or lustrous decorative piece? Consider Rayon. If the design will face unusual laundering, bleach, sunlight or abrasion, check the exact product care information before choosing.

Overlocker and coverstitch

Aerolock builds the seam. Aeroflock changes how it feels.

These threads are partners, not interchangeable names. Aerolock is the smooth, strong workhorse. Aeroflock is the fluffy looper thread that adds soft coverage and stretch.

Needle paths

Aerolock 125
Strong, smooth seam formation

Looper paths

Aeroflock No. 100
Fluffy, soft, elastic coverage

Everyday overlocking

Use Aerolock in the required needle and looper paths for a durable, balanced construction seam.

Comfort upgrade

Keep smooth thread in the needles and place Aeroflock in one or both permitted loopers for softer seams against skin.

Decorative finish

Use Aeroflock’s volume to fill rolled hems, flatlock effects and visible edge stitching with fewer gaps.

Do not force bulky thread through an unsuitable path. Aeroflock is primarily a looper thread. Check the manual, rethread in the stated order, reduce looper tension only in small steps and test stretch and seam balance on an offcut.

Metallic and special effects

Give metallic thread room to travel

Metallic 40 Classic Gift Box 8012: eight 200m spools.

Most metallic frustration is mechanical abrasion. A needle with an eye that is too small can scrape the special surface thousands of times before the design is complete.

Check the complete thread path

Make sure the spool unwinds freely and the thread is not catching on a cap, guide, rough edge or tight corner.

Slow down and sample

Use the real fabric, stabiliser and design. Start at a moderate speed and change tension only in small increments.

Use metallic as a designed accent

Open motifs, borders, outlines and lettering often stitch more cleanly than replacing every dense fill with metallic thread.

GoldenSilver fact check: Madeira GoldenSilver Gold is gold-coloured, but its precious-metal content is silver—2% pure silver Ag 999.9—not gold. It is a decorative special-effect thread, not solid wire or everyday construction thread.

Four easily confused products

Special threads: what they actually do

Wash Away 9660

Temporary PVA basting thread. Stitch temporary seams, quilting guides or positioning lines, then dissolve the thread with water. It is not a water-soluble stabiliser and must not hold a permanent seam.

See Wash Away 9660

Smocking 9662

Heat-reactive bobbin thread. Sew the design flat with normal top thread, turn the work bobbin-side up and use controlled steam to create puckers and dimension. It is not ordinary elastic shirring thread.

See Smocking 9662

Elastic 9800B

Transparent knitting-in yarn. Carry it alongside knitting or crochet yarn in cuffs, ribbing or fitted bands. Do not use it as sewing-machine top thread, bobbin thread or structural waistband elastic.

See Elastic 9800B

GoldenSilver 9664

Precious-metal special effect. Use Gold or Silver for machine embroidery, decorative sewing or hand embroidery accents with a fresh NM 90/14 metallic needle and moderate speed.

See GoldenSilver Gold

Needle selector

Match the needle to both thread and fabric

A needle’s point enters the material; its scarf helps the machine form the stitch; and its eye protects the moving thread. Choosing only by size overlooks most of the job.

9452 Lana / Wool Wool and bulky decorative threads A larger thread needs room through the needle eye for decorative embroidery.
9454 Quilting Piecing and quilting layers The needle must pass cleanly through a quilt sandwich at repeated quilting speed.
9455 Universal Everyday woven-fabric sewing You need a reliable starting needle for standard construction on woven fabrics.
9456 Anti-Glue Adhesive-backed work Temporary spray, adhesive stabiliser, appliqué web or sticky layers are causing residue.
9457 Jeans Denim and heavyweight woven fabric A firm woven fabric needs a stronger, purpose-shaped needle rather than a general point.
9462 ELx705 Medium Ball Point Compatible overlock and coverstitch machines on knits Your machine manual specifies ELx705 and the medium ball point suits the stretch fabric.

Needle systems are machine-specific. Never assume ELx705, 130/705H or another system is interchangeable: confirm the machine manual before fitting it.

Madeira tools and accessories

Small precision tools that solve specific sewing problems

A good accessory earns its place by making one awkward job safer, faster or more accurate. Choose the tool by the movement you need: reaching over a hoop, protecting an appliqué layer, marking a temporary guide, removing stitches or placing one controlled drop of oil.

Tool safety matters: stop the machine before trimming or unpicking near the needle. Test every marker on a scrap or hidden area. Oil only when the machine manual tells the user to do so, with the stated oil type, location and quantity—many modern machines do not have user-oiling points.

Embroidery support

Choose stabiliser by movement and removal

The stabiliser’s first job is to stop the fabric moving while thousands of stitches land. Its second job is to leave the right finish after embroidery.

Tear-away

Stable woven fabrics

A practical starting point for firm, non-stretch fabric and lighter designs when you want excess backing to tear away after stitching.

Permanent support

Knits, stretch and dense designs

Use support that remains with the embroidery when the fabric can move, the garment will be worn repeatedly or the design is dense.

Water-soluble

Sheer work, toppers and lace

Useful when the support must disappear, for free-standing lace, or as a surface topping that stops stitches sinking into pile.

Self-adhesive

Difficult-to-hoop pieces

Helps position small, shaped or hoop-sensitive items. Test residue, removal and fabric compatibility first.

Fusible

Extra fabric control

A temporary bond can help keep unstable material flat. Always test heat, pressure and removal on the project fabric.

Use both sides when required. A towel may need permanent or tear-away support underneath plus a water-soluble topper above. “One stabiliser per project” is not a rule; the fabric surface and the reverse may have different needs.

Fast diagnosis

Fix the cause, not just the tension dial

Rethread with the presser foot raised, fit a fresh correct needle and test the exact materials before changing several settings at once. One change at a time makes the real cause visible.

Thread keeps breaking

  1. Check the thread path, spool cap and guides for catching.
  2. Fit a fresh needle with the correct eye and point.
  3. Slow the machine, especially with metallic or dense designs.
  4. Check design density, stabilisation and hooping before loosening tension.

Skipped stitches

  1. Confirm the needle is fully inserted and faces the correct direction.
  2. Match the needle system and point to the machine and fabric.
  3. Replace a bent, blunt or damaged needle.
  4. Check fabric flagging and add suitable support if the material lifts.

Embroidery puckers

  1. Use stabiliser that can control the fabric and design density.
  2. Hoop smoothly without stretching the fabric out of shape.
  3. Check top and bobbin tension with a test design.
  4. Reduce excessive density or pull compensation in the design if required.

Loops or messy underside

  1. Stop and rethread the top path with the presser foot raised.
  2. Check that the bobbin is inserted and feeding correctly.
  3. Remove lint and thread fragments from accessible areas.
  4. Confirm the needle, stabiliser and starting tail control before sewing again.

Overlocker seam feels harsh

  1. Confirm the seam is not unnecessarily dense or narrow.
  2. Use Aeroflock in the permitted looper path for softer coverage.
  3. Keep a strong smooth thread such as Aerolock in the needle paths.
  4. Test stretch, differential feed and looper balance on the real knit.

Metallic thread frays

  1. Fit a fresh NM 90/14 metallic needle.
  2. Let the spool feed freely without twisting or snagging.
  3. Reduce speed and check the thread path for rough contact.
  4. Use an open, metallic-friendly design and sufficient stabiliser.

Madeira thread FAQs

Straight answers before you stitch

What is the best Madeira thread for machine embroidery?
Polyneon 40 is a strong, versatile starting choice for garments and frequently washed items. Rayon 40 is a strong aesthetic choice when high lustre and a soft decorative finish matter most. Match the decision to the finished item’s use and care.
What is the difference between Madeira Polyneon and Rayon?
Polyneon is polyester and is chosen for strength, durability and demanding wear. Rayon is viscose and is chosen for its exceptional sheen and smooth decorative appearance. Both are available in standard No. 40 machine embroidery formats.
What is the difference between Aerolock and Aeroflock?
Aerolock 125 is smooth, durable core-spun overlocker thread that can form strong seams in needle and looper paths. Aeroflock No. 100 is fluffy, textured polyester used primarily in loopers to add soft coverage, stretch and volume.
Can Aeroflock go through an overlocker needle?
Treat Aeroflock primarily as a looper thread unless the machine manufacturer specifically permits another use. Its bulky texture is ideal for loopers; Aerolock or another suitable smooth thread is the safer construction choice in needle paths.
Which needle should I use for Madeira metallic thread?
For Madeira Metallic 40 and GoldenSilver, start with a fresh Madeira 9451 metallic needle in NM 90/14. Its larger eye helps reduce abrasion. Moderate the machine speed and test the complete fabric, stabiliser and design combination.
Why does my embroidery thread keep breaking?
Common causes include a damaged or unsuitable needle, a snag in the thread path, excess speed, tight tension, insufficient stabilisation or a design that is too dense for the chosen thread. Rethread, fit a fresh correct needle and change one variable at a time.
Which embroidery stabiliser should I choose?
Use tear-away for many stable woven projects, permanent support for stretch fabrics and dense designs, and water-soluble products where support or topping must disappear. Self-adhesive or fusible options can control difficult-to-hoop work. Always sample the exact combination.
Can Madeira AeroQuilt be used in a domestic sewing machine?
Yes. AeroQuilt 40 is designed for quilting, including domestic-machine and free-motion work, as well as longarm use. It can also suit decorative and general sewing where its strong No. 40 profile is appropriate. Test needle size and tension on the quilt sandwich.
Is Madeira Wash Away thread the same as water-soluble stabiliser?
No. Wash Away 9660 is a 100% PVA temporary sewing and basting thread that dissolves in water. Water-soluble stabiliser is a sheet, film or fabric-like support used under or over embroidery. Neither should be confused with a permanent seam component.
Is Madeira Smocking thread ordinary elastic shirring thread?
No. Smocking 9662 is heat-reactive polyester thread used in the bobbin. The work stays flat while sewing and puckers when controlled heat and steam are applied from the reverse. Conventional elastic shirring thread gathers through stretch and tension instead.
Can Madeira Elastic 9800B be used in a sewing machine?
No. Elastic 9800B is a transparent knitting-in yarn carried alongside knitting or crochet yarn. It is not intended for a sewing-machine needle or bobbin and is not a replacement for structural elastic tape.
What are the best scissors for trimming inside an embroidery hoop?
Double-curved embroidery scissors such as Madeira 9478 are designed to reach over the hoop while keeping the finger loops and hand above the work. The fine tips support close thread trimming, but the machine should always be stopped before the scissors approach the needle area.
What are duckbill appliqué scissors used for?
Duckbill scissors trim the upper appliqué layer close to the stitching. The broad lower blade helps separate and shield the base fabric underneath, reducing the chance of accidentally cutting into the project layer.
Can I oil my sewing or embroidery machine with the Madeira Oil Pen?
Only if the machine manual instructs the owner to apply oil and identifies the oil type, location, quantity and interval. Some modern machines have no user-oiling points. The 050PEN is a precision applicator, not permission to oil an unspecified part of the machine.
Does the Madeira Magic Pen disappear from every fabric?
Madeira describes the purple marks as air-erasable after a couple of hours, but the timing depends on the fabric and conditions. Test both tips on a scrap or hidden area, confirm that the mark disappears satisfactorily, and complete the guided task before it fades.
How should Madeira thread be stored?
Keep thread clean, dry and away from direct sun, heat and dust. Secure loose ends so they do not snag, protect metallic surfaces from abrasion, and retain colour numbers or labels so replacement shades can be identified accurately.
