Shop by brand & choose the right yarn
Shop your favourite yarn brand
Explore Rowan & MODE at Rowan, Malabrigo, Sirdar, Broadway, Crucci and Wool and the Gang. These brand pages contain yarn first; patterns are linked separately so you can choose the material without sorting through leaflets and tools.
Choose the pattern weight first
Use the yarn weight and finished gauge specified by your pattern. In New Zealand, DK is commonly called 8 ply, while 10 ply is often grouped with Aran and worsted. These are useful shopping groups, not a promise that every yarn will substitute perfectly. Swatch, wash and measure before beginning a fitted garment.
Compare machine-washable yarns across weights, checking each yarn’s wash cycle, temperature and drying directions.
Wool, merino, cotton or a blend?
Merino yarn offers natural warmth and softness; blends may add alpaca, silk, cotton or nylon for a different feel. Cotton yarn is useful for cooler garments, crochet and defined stitchwork. For colour that develops as you work, explore self-striping and colour-changing yarn. Check the fibre percentages rather than relying on the range name alone. Compare alpaca blend yarns across weights and brands.
Plan enough yarn for the whole project
Compare the pattern's required metres with the metres per ball or hank—not just its weight. Order enough of each shade together where possible, and check dye lots on arrival. Browse knitting and crochet patterns, needle sets and crochet hooks separately. Direct Sewing supplies yarn to makers throughout New Zealand.
