Measure cotton after washing and drying
Rowan's reference tension is 28 stitches and 36 rows per 10cm using 3mm needles. Cotton does not behave exactly like elastic wool, so wash the swatch on the recommended gentle cycle, dry it flat and measure again before starting a fitted garment.
Calculate the right quantity for your project
Use the total metreage or ball count for the exact pattern size and version you are making. Lace, cables, crochet, sleeve length and personal adjustments can all change the amount required.
Find the required metres
Read the figure for your exact size rather than relying on a general garment estimate.
Divide by 175
A project requiring 900m uses 5.14 balls before any allowance.
Round up and add margin
For that example, buy at least 6 balls and consider another for swatching or adjustments.

Before you begin with Summerlite 4 Ply
Is Rowan Summerlite a true 4 ply yarn?
Yes. It is Rowan's fine Summerlite 4 Ply, comparable with fingering-weight yarn. Its reference gauge is 28 stitches and 36 rows per 10cm using 3mm needles.
Is it 100% cotton?
Yes. Summerlite 4 Ply is made from 100% cotton and has a soft, smooth, modern matt finish.
Is it suitable for warm weather?
Yes. The fine cotton fabric is breathable and well suited to spring and summer tops, shrugs, light cardigans and trans-seasonal layers.
Does it work for baby knitting?
Yes. Rowan includes Summerlite among its baby yarn options. The soft cotton and gentle machine-wash care make it useful for fine baby garments and accessories. Always follow the chosen pattern and care instructions.
Is Summerlite 4 Ply good for crochet?
Yes. Its smooth strand and excellent definition make crochet stitches and lace patterns easy to see. Rowan also publishes crochet garments specifically for Summerlite 4 Ply.
Will it show cables and lace clearly?
Yes. Excellent stitch definition is one of this yarn's key strengths, so textured stitches, cables, lace and eyelets remain crisp.
Can I substitute another 4 ply yarn?
Possibly, but cotton has less natural elasticity than wool. Compare gauge, metreage, fibre and drape, then wash the swatch before committing to a fitted garment.
How many balls should I order?
Use the ball count in your pattern or divide the required metres by 175 and round up. Add an allowance for swatching, joins, pattern matching and personal adjustments.
Can it be machine washed?
Yes. Rowan specifies a warm gentle machine wash. Reshape and dry flat in the shade, and do not tumble dry or bleach.
