Choosing and caring for machine-washable yarn
Choose the yarn for the project: Compare fibre content, yarn weight, metres per ball and pattern gauge before choosing by care requirements. Machine-washable yarns span different weights and constructions; make, wash and measure a swatch before substituting one for another.
Use the specified wash programme: Temperature and cycle vary. DMC Natura Denim lists hand or machine washing no higher than 30°C; Sirdar Country Classic 4ply specifies 40°C on a wool cycle. Read the selected yarn’s ball band and product directions rather than applying one programme to the whole collection.
Check drying separately: Machine-washable does not imply tumble-dryer suitability. Follow the label’s drying instructions, including reshaping or drying flat where specified. Superwash wording also leaves the yarn’s stated washing and drying directions in place.
Care for the finished item: Allow the swatch to show how the yarn behaves after washing. Check the care needs of any other yarns, trims or materials in the project, and keep the ball-band information with the finished piece or gift.
