When is tear-away the right choice?
Tear-away provides support during stitching, with excess removed afterwards. It is commonly considered for stable woven fabrics and compatible designs. Stretchy garments or dense stitching may need permanent cut-away support instead. Test with the actual fabric and design before deciding.
Standard, sticky or iron-on backing?
Madeira Cotton Soft and Sulky Tear Away Plus are standard tear-away options. Cotton Fix and Filmoplast use adhesive surfaces for suitable positioning methods. Cotton Stable and Brother BM3 are iron-on options. Adhesive backing, iron-on stabiliser and permanent fusible web do different jobs; do not substitute them by name alone.
Choose a format that fits the hoop
Pre-cut sheets and cap squares suit repeat work when their dimensions match the frame and placement. Smaller rolls are flexible for mixed projects; larger rolls are useful for production. Check width, length and pack quantity on the selected listing before comparing price.
Remove excess without disturbing the embroidery
Support the stitches and remove backing carefully, following the product's directions. Residual material within dense stitched areas behaves differently from open areas. Heat-removable films are kept in the broader stabiliser range, rather than presented as ordinary tear-away. Compare cut-away backing for lasting support or wash-away options when the project can be rinsed.
