Soft support for everyday embroidery.
Give your fabric support while you stitch, then remove the excess by hand. Cotton Soft is a soft cotton nonwoven for machine embroidery, appliqué and decorative sewing where a tear-away backing suits the project.
This white 30cm-wide roll contains 10m, ready to cut into backing pieces for your hoop or sewing area.

Where it works best
Decorative machine sewing
Use under appliqué, decorative stitches or buttonholes when the fabric needs support through the machine. Remove the surplus once the stitching is complete.
Patchwork foundations
For suitable foundation-piecing techniques, draw the pattern on the backing and stitch the fabric pieces in sequence before carefully removing the foundation.

How to use it
- Cut a piece large enough for the embroidery area and secure hooping. Place it beneath the fabric and hoop both without stretching the fabric.
- Stitch a sample with your chosen design, fabric and thread. Where more support is needed, test additional layers before sewing the finished piece.
- After stitching, support the embroidered area and gently tear away the surplus backing. Keep the unused roll closed in its packaging, away from dirt and moisture.
Tear-away is not a wash-away material. Backing can remain beneath the stitches; choose a cut-away when the fabric and design need continuing support.
Good to know
Do I iron it onto the fabric?
No. Cotton Soft has no iron-on coating. Cotton Stable is Madeira’s temporary iron-on tear-away option.
Will the 30cm width fit my hoop?
Check the outside dimensions and gripping allowance of your hoop. The backing must reach beyond the stitching area so it can be held securely.
