Quilting supply buying guide
Which ruler and cutter should I start with?
For most patchwork, pair a clear acrylic ruler with a 45mm rotary cutter and a self-healing mat. Add a square ruler for blocks and a smaller cutter for curves or small pieces. Always match replacement blades to the cutter diameter and model. Explore The Gypsy Quilter tools for ruler grips, quilt organisation and pressing aids.
What thread and needle do I need?
50wt cotton is a versatile choice for piecing; hand-quilting and decorative threads have different weights and handling. Use quilting-specific machine needles for multiple layers, and replace a blunt needle before troubleshooting tension.
Pins, clips or glue?
Use pins or clips where you need a temporary hold. Temporary fabric glue and basting sprays can stabilise quilt layers before stitching; check fabric, heat and wash instructions and test on a scrap first.

Which quilting foot fits?
Check your machine model and shank type before ordering. A quarter-inch foot helps piecing, while a walking foot manages layered quilting and a free-motion foot is designed for free-motion work. Compare free-motion and ruler-quilting supplies by machine fit, foot clearance and ruler thickness.
