Prepare the edge. Stitch by hand.

Find hand-appliqué needles, prepared-edge templates, fine pins and cutting tools for your next fabric design. Choose a needle for your fabric and thread, then compare the shapes, blade styles and pack contents on each listing. Tools and materials are sold as described individually.

Choosing hand-appliqué needles and tools

Start with the needle. The range includes Bohin hand-appliqué needles and Tulip Hiroshima size 10 Big Eye and size 11 options. Compare the shaft, point, length and eye with your fabric and thread. A finer needle is not automatically the easiest to thread or the best choice for every material.

Choose how to prepare the shape. Karen Kay Buckley circle, leaf and oval templates help form repeatable prepared edges; the writable template plastic lets you trace a shape from your own pattern. Match the finished shape and follow your pattern’s fabric allowance and preparation method. For the heat-resistant plastic sheets, follow their stated dry, medium iron setting rather than assuming any heat or steam is suitable.

Hold and turn small edges. The short Tulip appliqué pins help position small fabric pieces. Clover’s Hera tool creates a crease and helps turn narrow edges without depositing ink. Test the method on matching spare fabric, and keep pins clear of the cutting line.

Choose the cutting action. The listed appliqué scissors include duckbill styles that help separate the layer being trimmed from the fabric below, plus a straight precision pair. Compare blade shape and overall size. These preparation tools can serve hand or machine appliqué; the collection does not supply a complete project kit or imply that every tool is exclusive to hand work.
