Choosing PQW tools & getting started with Quilt As You Go
What is Quilt As You Go?
Quilt As You Go, often shortened to QAYG, breaks quilting into smaller sections that are quilted before being joined. Working on individual blocks can make a project easier to handle on a domestic sewing machine. Pauline Rogers' Quilt As You Go Handbook explains her Between the Blocks and Back to Back methods with photographs and step-by-step guidance.
Choose the templates for your design
- QAYG Quilting Templates Set A: three clear templates for hibiscus, flower and leaf designs. Use the full shapes or combine sections to build a design for your block.
- QAYG Quilting Templates Set C: two templates for clamshell and curved quilting layouts.
- QAYG Quilting Templates Set F: three clear templates for flower, tulip and leaf designs, with possibilities for blocks, borders and sashing.
- Dot to Dot Curves & Grid System: five templates for planning reference points, curves and lines across your fabric.
- Feather Templates: three templates with different feather sizes to help plan a flowing feather design.
These design templates help you mark a layout before stitching. They are not automatically interchangeable with thick ruler-work guides used beside a sewing-machine foot. Follow the instructions for the specific template and quilting method, and test your fabric marker on a scrap before marking your quilt.
What are pieced-sashing templates for?
The QAYG Pieced Sashing Templates 2-inch Set contains six templates for preparing decorative sashing, including squares, triangles, flying geese and star arrangements. This is a fabric-cutting and piecing set, rather than a quilting-line stencil. The 2-inch measurement is the finished sashing width. PQW recommends a matching 2-inch Sasher, purchased separately; follow the set's cutting and assembly instructions.
Start with a manageable project
Choose a block design and a joining method before cutting your quilt. The handbook is a useful starting point for learning Pauline's approach, while a template set helps you plan the stitched design. Practise on a small quilt sandwich with your chosen fabric, batting and thread before working on the finished blocks.
