Choosing the right sewing adhesive
Temporary or permanent fabric glue?
Temporary basting glue, spray and tape help position layers, zips or appliqué before stitching. Permanent adhesives are intended to remain in the finished project. Removal methods, drying times and washability vary: choose from the exact product instructions, not just the word “fabric”.
Fusible web versus interfacing
Fusible web bonds fabric layers; interfacing provides structure or support. Use web or hemming tape when the job is adhesion, and suitable interfacing when collars, cuffs or garment edges need reinforcement. They are not interchangeable.
Can I sew through an iron-on adhesive?
Only if the particular adhesive is designed for stitching. HeatnBond Lite is a sewable option; UltraHold is a no-sew adhesive. Choose the correct formula before cutting an appliqué or hem. Follow the pack’s pressing temperature, timing and steam instructions rather than one setting for every adhesive.
Test first, then finish
Try the adhesive on a scrap for colour changes, stiffness and bond strength. Check fabric care instructions and allow the stated drying or curing time. Use sprays with the ventilation and precautions on the label, protecting your machine and work surface. Anti-fray liquids help seal edges but do not replace a load-bearing seam.
