Sirdar's reference tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm using 4mm needles. Use 4mm as a starting point, then choose the needle or hook that gives your pattern's required tension after the swatch has been washed.
Self-patterning tip: make a generously sized swatch. It tells you far more than a few rows about both the finished fabric and how the colour sequence behaves at your stitch count.
