Why this blend works

Premium feel without precious-care fuss

Country Classic combines the comfort knitters want from merino with the structure and convenience of acrylic. The result is a versatile yarn that feels soft and warm as you work, holds detailed stitch patterns clearly and suits garments intended to be worn regularly.

Warm, light layers

Fine 4 ply fabric keeps the warmth of wool without the bulk of a heavier yarn.

Clear stitch definition

Fair Isle motifs, intarsia, lace panels, ribbing and textured stitches stay crisp and readable.

Easy-care confidence

A 40C wool-cycle wash makes finished pieces more practical for everyday wardrobes.

Made for fine patternwork

Let colour, lace and texture do the talking

The smooth, even construction is especially good when the stitch pattern is the star. Use one shade for elegant texture, combine close tones for refined colourwork, or build bold motifs from the coordinated palette.

  • Fair Isle and stranded colourwork
  • Intarsia motifs and statement panels
  • Lace, eyelets and decorative stitches
  • Fine ribbing, hems and polished edgings
Fine gauge.
Beautiful detail.
Wearable warmth.

A classic choice for makers who want more definition than a fluffy yarn and more warmth than a plant fibre.

Make the finished size reliable

Swatch, wash and measure before you begin

Sirdar's reference tension is 28 stitches and 36 rows per 10cm using 3.25mm needles. Treat the needle size as a starting point and use the size that produces the pattern's required gauge after washing.

  • Swatch in the main stitch or colourwork pattern
  • Wash the swatch using the planned care method
  • Allow it to dry flat before measuring
  • Change needle or hook size and repeat if needed
For colourwork: check the gauge in the actual motif. Stranded sections often knit more tightly than plain stocking stitch, which can change both fit and fabric flexibility.
Plan the full project

How many 50g balls will you need?

Garment quantities change with size, fit, sleeve length, stitch pattern and colour placement. Work from the pattern's total metreage for the exact size rather than relying on a broad garment estimate.

Find the metreage

Use the required metres for the exact size and version you intend to make.

Divide by 200 metres

Each 50g ball contains approximately 200m. Divide and always round up to a complete ball.

Add an allowance

Allow for swatching, joining, finishing, colourwork floats and any planned changes.

Example: a pattern requiring 780m needs at least four balls because 780 divided by 200 equals 3.9. Add another ball if sizing, swatching or modifications make the quantity tight.

Merino blend or pure wool?

Choose the fibre balance that suits the project

Country Classic merino blend

Choose this for merino warmth and softness with added resilience, easier machine care and a stable surface for detailed patternwork.

100% wool 4 ply

Choose pure wool when an all-natural fibre is the priority and you are comfortable following its specific care requirements. Match metreage and washed gauge, not only the 4 ply label.

Questions before choosing a shade?

Sirdar Country Classic 4 Ply FAQs

What is Sirdar Country Classic 4 Ply made from?

It is a 50% merino wool and 50% acrylic blend. It is not 100% wool.

Is it machine washable?

Yes. Sirdar specifies a 40C machine wash on a wool cycle. Follow the ball-band instructions for the full care guidance.

Is this a sock yarn?

It is a fingering-weight 4 ply yarn and can be used where the pattern gauge and fabric suit, but it is not a nylon-reinforced specialist sock yarn. Its strongest uses are lightweight garments, colourwork, lace, texture and fine accessories.

Is it suitable for babies?

The soft blend and machine-washable care can suit baby garments when the chosen pattern calls for this weight. Comfort varies by wearer, so test the fabric if skin sensitivity is a concern.

Can I crochet with Country Classic 4 Ply?

Yes. Sirdar lists a 3.25mm crochet hook as a starting point. Choose the hook that produces your pattern's required washed gauge and drape.

What needle size should I use?

Sirdar recommends 3.25mm needles as a starting point. Follow the pattern and your washed gauge swatch for the final size.

Can I substitute another 4 ply yarn?

Possibly, but compare fibre, metres per 50g, structure and washed gauge. Yarns labelled 4 ply can still produce different fabric and require different quantities.

How many balls do I need?

Divide the pattern's required metreage by approximately 200m per ball and round up. Add a sensible allowance for swatching, finishing and any changes.

Why might the colour look different on my screen?

Displays and lighting reproduce colour differently, and dye lots may vary slightly. Use the shade number, shade name and photograph together when selecting.
