Janome needle types & compatibility guide
Choose the needle system for your machine first, then the point and size for your fabric and thread. A flat shank or matching size alone does not confirm compatibility.
Blue, Red or Purple Tip?
Blue Tip 75/11 combines a ballpoint with an oversized eye for general sewing and machine embroidery, including suitable lightweight stretch fabrics. Red Tip 90/14 has a larger eye for denser embroidery and heavier fabrics. Purple Tip 90/14 uses a flanged ballpoint design for free-motion quilting, heavyweight knits and dense embroidery. Red and Purple are the same size but are not the same needle type.
Universal, denim, leather & topstitch
Choose Universal assorted for everyday woven-fabric sewing. The Denim 100/16 pack is designed for heavier woven fabrics such as denim and canvas; it does not increase your machine's sewing capacity. Leather 15x1LL needles have a cutting point and should not be used as an everyday woven or knit needle. Topstitch needles have an enlarged eye and groove for suitable decorative threads.
Janome overlocker needles: HA1SP / HAx1 SP
HA1SP is commonly written HAx1 SP. Janome specifies this system for the MyLock 554D, MyLock 654D and AT2000D. The Schmetz Super Stretch packs here contain five needles in your selected size: 75/11 or 90/14. Match the size to your manual, fabric and thread. Other Janome overlockers can have different requirements—HAx1 SP and ELx705 are not interchangeable just because both are sold for overlockers.
CoverPro, HD9 & specialist embroidery machines
CoverPro: choose ELx705 where your model specifies it, checking the full designation, point and size. The 2000CPX instructions list 80/12 and 90/14. HD9: choose the specified HLx5 system for this straight-stitch machine. These specialist packs are Schmetz-branded, not Janome-branded. MB-series embroidery: check the exact model manual; the MB-7 specifies DBxK5Q1-NY. Do not substitute ordinary colour-tip packs or Brother PR needles based on size alone.
What do the two size numbers mean? 75/11 and 90/14 each describe one size in two numbering systems. A higher number means a thicker needle, not a different needle system. Check the selected pack for its sizes and quantity, and test a fresh needle on a scrap of your project fabric.
