The right needle makes the difference.
Shop Schmetz sewing machine needles in New Zealand for home sewing, quilting, embroidery and industrial machines. Start with your machine's needle system, then choose the point and size for the fabric and thread—not the brand name alone.
Needle systems, fabric types & sizes explained
Choose the system before the size
The system describes the needle's dimensions and design; a size such as 80/12 describes its thickness. Many household machines use 130/705 H-family needles, but some vintage, high-speed quilting, overlocker and coverstitch models require other systems. Read your manual or the specified needle packet first.
Match the needle to the material
Universal is a useful starting point for many woven fabrics. Jersey/ballpoint and stretch needles address different knit fabrics; denim, Microtex, quilting and leather needles have more specific roles. Topstitch and embroidery options accommodate particular thread and stitching requirements. Test the chosen needle on the full fabric stack before sewing the project.
Overlockers and industrial machines need extra care
ELx705, HAx1 SP, DBx1, DPx5, B27 and 135x17 are not interchangeable names for a universal needle. Match the complete system and point designation. Twin needles also require a suitable machine, correct spacing and enough needle-plate clearance; follow the machine instructions.
When should I change the needle?
Change a bent, damaged or blunt needle promptly. Skipped stitches, thread breakage and fabric damage can also result from incorrect sizing, threading or tension, so do not assume a thicker needle is the answer. Browse industrial needle systems or all machine and hand-sewing needles. Send your model and current packet details if you need help.
