Choosing batting: fibres, pack sizes & fusible options

What is quilt batting or wadding?

Batting, also called wadding, is the middle layer between your quilt top and backing. It adds body and influences how the finished quilt feels, drapes and shows off your stitching. This collection brings together pre-cut quilt batting packs; loose toy stuffing and cushion filling are different products.

Which batting should I choose?

  • Cotton: compare Sew Easy CosyCotton, cotton batting with scrim and cotton fusible packs. Check whether you want a natural-colour or bleached batting, particularly under pale quilt fabrics.
  • 80/20 cotton/polyester: choose between Hobbs Heirloom fusible batting and Warm 80/20 from The Warm Company. Both blends contain 80% cotton and 20% polyester, but their construction and handling instructions differ.
  • Bamboo: browse Sew Easy bamboo batting and bamboo batting with scrim in the listed pre-cut sizes.
  • Wool/cotton: the Sew Easy 50/50 blend combines equal proportions of wool and cotton. Check the pack's care instructions against how you plan to wash your finished quilt.
  • Polyester: Sew Easy's 200gsm polyester batting with scrim is a low-loft option. Loft describes the batting's thickness, rather than the dimensions of the pack.

What is different about Hobbs fusible batting?

Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Fusible has a heat-activated coating on both sides to help hold the quilt top and backing in place during preparation. Choose the cot or queen pack to suit your project. Fusible batting still needs quilting; it is not a replacement for stitching the layers together.

Hobbs specifies a dry iron with no steam for this fusible range and does not recommend pre-washing it. Follow the packet instructions and test with your fabrics before starting. Read Hobbs' fusible batting instructions.

How much batting do I need?

Measure the quilt top and allow extra batting on every side for your quilting method. Ask your long-arm quilter for their required allowance before ordering. Cot and queen are size labels, not identical measurements across brands: for example, the listed Sew Easy queen packs are 84 × 100 inches, while Warm 80/20 queen is 90 × 110 inches. Always check the chosen product and size option.

What is scrim, and how closely should I quilt?

Scrim is a lightweight supporting layer that helps stabilise batting. It does not make every batting suitable for the same stitch spacing. Check the maximum quilting distance, shrinkage and washing guidance on your particular pack rather than applying one rule to the whole range. A small quilted sample is useful for checking appearance and handling.
