What would you like to make?

Consider it for smaller patchwork quilts, wall hangings and quilted accessories when the pattern calls for fusible batting. Both fabrics must tolerate the pressing method on the pack. The adhesive helps with assembly; it does not turn the batting into a no-sew quilt filling.

Try an offcut first. Fuse a small sandwich using the packet directions, let it cool, then check the bond and the feel before working on your finished quilt top.

Choose by measurements, not just the size name

Your batting needs to extend beyond every edge of the quilt top for basting, quilting and trimming. Add your required allowance to both the width and length before choosing a pack. If using a longarm quilting service, follow your quilter’s requested margin.

For example: a 100 × 120cm quilt top with a 5cm allowance on each side needs at least 110 × 130cm of batting. Your own quilting method may need a larger margin.

Preparing and caring for your batting

Follow the Sew Easy packet directions for fusing and washing. Check that all fabrics tolerate the required pressing method. Let the fused layers cool before handling, then quilt as directed.

Helpful answers

Do I still need to quilt it?

Yes. Fusing helps hold the layers for sewing; finish the quilt with stitching and spacing appropriate to the product instructions.

What iron setting should I use?

Follow this Sew Easy pack’s directions for temperature, time and moisture. Do not substitute another brand’s fusible-batting instructions or pre-wash unless directed.

Is it a firm bag stabiliser?

It is quilt batting, not a rigid stabiliser or foam. Use the material specified by your bag pattern if it needs structured support.
