What would you like to make?

Consider this blend for patchwork quilts and throws when you would like wool in the filling without choosing an all-wool batting. Your top fabric, backing and stitch density also shape the finished feel, so quilt a small sample if you are comparing fibres for a special project.

Making a gift quilt? Include the batting’s care instructions with it so the recipient can care for the wool-containing filling as well as the fabrics.

Choose by measurements, not just the size name

Your batting needs to extend beyond every edge of the quilt top for basting, quilting and trimming. Add your required allowance to both the width and length before choosing a pack. If using a longarm quilting service, follow your quilter’s requested margin.

For example: a 100 × 120cm quilt top with a 5cm allowance on each side needs at least 110 × 130cm of batting. Your own quilting method may need a larger margin.

Preparing and caring for your batting

Unpack and let folds relax before cutting. Use the preparation, maximum quilting-distance and care instructions supplied with your specific pack. Baste the layers smoothly without stretching, and test your intended washing method on a small quilted sample.

Helpful answers

How is it different from 100% wool batting?

Half of this filling is cotton. The separate Sew Easy wool listing has 100% wool batting fibres with polyester scrim. They are different products, not interchangeable names.

Does 150gsm tell me how thick it is?

GSM is weight per square metre, not thickness or a warmth rating. Use a quilted sample to judge the finished loft and drape.
