Coverstitch buying guide & common questions
Already own an overlocker?
A dedicated coverstitch machine lets you move between seam construction and hemming without converting one machine back and forth. Compare the Brother CV3550, Juki MCS-1500 and Janome CoverPro 3000 Professional. All offer coverstitch and chainstitch; the Brother and Janome also offer top-cover stitching.
Want overlocking and coverstitch in one?
Compare the Juki MO-735N, Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S500 and PFAFF admire air 7000. These combination coverlock machines perform both jobs, but require a setup change between modes. The Juki uses conventional threading; the Husqvarna Viking and PFAFF provide air-threading for the loopers. Needle threading remains a separate step.
Coverstitch, top coverstitch or chainstitch?
Standard coverstitch makes two or three parallel needle lines on the fabric’s face, with looper thread underneath—a familiar finish on stretchy hems. Top coverstitch adds a covering thread across the face for a decorative, double-sided finish. Chainstitch uses one needle thread and a looper thread to form a single line with a chain underneath. Check the model’s stitch options rather than assuming every coverstitch machine offers top cover.
Does a coverstitch machine replace an overlocker?
No. A dedicated coverstitch machine hems and stitches without trimming the fabric edge. An overlocker trims and wraps raw edges, and can join suitable seams. A combination coverlock offers both functions in different modes. A conventional sewing machine is still useful for zips, buttonholes and general construction.
What should I compare before buying?
Think about the garments you make most often. Compare narrow, wide and triple coverstitch options, top-cover capability, threading access, working space, differential feed and presser-foot pressure adjustment. Differential feed helps manage wavy stretch fabrics and puckering. Test on an offcut of your actual fabric, including a folded hem or seam crossing, to assess the finish you want.
Which thread, needles and attachments do I need?
Choose suitable sewing thread and the exact needle system specified in your machine’s manual. Needle systems are not interchangeable across every model. Binding attachments, hem guides and presser feet must also match the machine and your intended finish. Check whether accessories are supplied or sold separately; ask Direct Sewing if you need a compatible setup.
