Walking-foot sewing

For a walking-foot machine specifying DPx17. Consider the fabric layers and thread together when choosing a size for bags or upholstery.

Bartack operations

Use only where the bartack machine specifies this system. Confirm any additional point or needle-form requirement for the intended reinforcement pattern.

Heavier textile projects

A choice of sizes helps you test different textile-and-thread combinations without changing systems. Check penetration, stitch formation and the appearance of the needle holes.

Choose the required option in the selector above. Each selection is supplied separately; this is not a set of every size shown.

Before you start

  1. Check the machine’s complete needle system and size range. Choose the point and size for your fabric and thread.
  2. Switch off and isolate the machine as instructed. Install the needle fully, in the orientation specified by the manual.
  3. Sew a sample with the intended layers and thread. Check stitch formation and fabric marking before continuing.

These are not automatically interchangeable with DPx5, DPx35 or a leather-cutting needle. A walking-foot feed mechanism does not identify the needle system.

Good to know

Can I use these for leather?

Do not assume so from the machine type. Leather may require a specific cutting point; choose the exact point and system recommended for the leather and seam.

Is the largest size always strongest for the job?

Larger is not automatically better. Use a size that accommodates the thread and material without making unnecessarily large holes or exceeding the machine’s range.
