Topping, heavy film or fabric-like wash-away?
Topping and backing are not the same
A thin water-soluble topping sits on the fabric surface to help stitches remain visible on suitable pile or textured fabrics. It may still need a separate backing underneath. Do not assume that a light film can support a dense design on its own.
Choose the right type of wash-away support
Avalon Light, Brother BM5 and Sulky Solvy provide film/topping options. Avalon Ultra and Ultra Solvy are heavier films for more demanding suitable techniques. Avalon Plus and Brother BM6 are fabric-like wash-away supports; Avalon Fix adds an adhesive surface. Prym Creative Interfacing provides a separate sheet option for compatible creative embroidery and mending.
Freestanding lace needs a suitable design
Use a pattern designed for freestanding work and the backing type and layer count it requires. The stitches must hold together after the support is removed. A heavy film and a fabric-like water-soluble backing can behave differently, even when both wash away.
Can the whole project tolerate water?
Fabric, thread, dyes and embellishments must all tolerate the prescribed rinsing. Follow the pack's water-temperature and removal instructions, and test first. Store unused material dry.
