Which quilting template do I need?
Mark a quilting design
Choose Pauline's Quilters World templates to plan flowers, leaves, feathers, curves and other stitched designs. QAYG sets help arrange motifs across blocks, while the Dot to Dot Curves & Grid System helps position reference points and lines. These are design-marking tools: trace or mark as instructed, then quilt your fabric. Test your fabric marker and its removal method on a scrap first.
Prepare appliqué circles, leaves and ovals
Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Templates help shape repeatable fabric pieces for appliqué. Choose standard or bigger circles and leaves, or oval shapes, to suit your pattern. Check the finished dimensions rather than judging from the photograph. Follow the set's preparation instructions and allow the fabric needed for turning the edge.
Piece patchwork blocks and sashing
Clover patchwork templates help trace squares, octagons, triangles and hexagons. The Sew Easy Dresden Plate ruler guides tapered pieces for Dresden blocks. PQW's 2-inch pieced-sashing set is for decorative Quilt As You Go joins. Kearing's 2-inch and 3-inch hot-ironing template sets are pressing aids for geometric fabric shapes. Choose by your construction method and check whether measurements show the finished shape or include a seam allowance.
Make your own templates
Plain template plastic lets you trace custom shapes; printed quarter-inch graph sheets help align them. Choose Karen Kay Buckley's heat-resistant sheets when the preparation method calls for pressing: the supplier specifies a dry iron at a medium setting. Ordinary template plastic is not automatically iron-safe. Follow each product's instructions and use separate craft scissors to cut plastic, keeping fabric shears for fabric.
Are these suitable for machine ruler work?
Not all templates are designed to run beside a ruler foot. Thin marking templates, appliqué shapes and patchwork cutting guides serve different purposes. For machine-guided quilting, choose a purpose-made guide such as the Handi Quilter Flower Power template, and check the ruler thickness, compatible foot and machine support before ordering. These specialist guides are kept separate from the marking and shaping tools above.
