Choosing free-motion and ruler-quilting supplies
How the work moves: On a domestic or sit-down setup, you move the quilt beneath the needle. On a frame-mounted longarm, you guide the machine over the quilt. Choose the foot, fabric-control aid and supporting surface for the way your system works.
Choose the exact foot: Open-toe, closed-toe, echo and darning feet offer different views and guiding edges. Check the full machine model, mounting system and stated exclusions. Low-shank, high-shank, snap-on and stitch-width labels alone do not confirm compatibility. Follow the machine’s feed-dog and foot-height instructions.
Match the ruler-work setup: Ruler quilting needs a suitable ruler foot, correct clearance and stable ruler support. The listed Juki ruler set uses 3mm guides; Handi Quilter includes ¼-inch longarm formats. Check the exact ruler, foot and machine combination. Thin cutting rulers and tracing templates are different tools.
Control and support the quilt: Fabric grips, quilting gloves and the machine-bed slider help with different aspects of moving fabric. Check sizes, placement and the working surface before choosing. The Juki TL table, Janome free-motion bobbin holders and Handi Quilter ruler bases have specific machine requirements.
Compare individual tools and packs: Some ruler packs contain guides also sold individually. Read the contents before combining purchases, then practise the chosen setup on a sample quilt sandwich. Machines, rulers and accessories shown together are included only when the selected listing says so.
