When should I choose cut-away backing?
Cut-away remains behind the embroidery after surplus material is trimmed. It is a useful starting point for stretchy fabrics, knitwear and designs that need continuing support during wear and washing. The right weight depends on the fabric, stitch density and design—not just the hoop size.
Standard, lightweight or iron-on?
Madeira Super Strong and Sulky Super Strong provide permanent embroidery backing in different roll formats. Weblon Plus is the lighter-weight option to consider when reducing bulk or show-through matters. Madeira Super Stable is a separate iron-on cut-away: confirm that the fabric tolerates its application temperature.
Pre-cut squares or rolls?
Pre-cut squares save measuring for repeat jobs if the dimensions suit your hoop and placement. Rolls offer more flexibility for varying designs. Allow enough material to secure the work correctly; a square that covers the design but cannot be held by the hoop may be too small.
Trim carefully and finish for comfort
Trim the excess without cutting fabric or stitches, leaving the support required by the design. A comfort layer such as Tender Touch is applied behind finished embroidery for a different purpose; it does not replace the backing needed while stitching. Compare tear-away backing and water-soluble support, or return to all stabilisers. Always test the full setup first.
