Choosing sashiko thread, needles and fabric
Start with the stitched effect
Choose a thread colour that gives the contrast you want on your cloth. Keep the shade number with your project notes, and sample the thread and fabric together before committing to the full motif.
Match the needle to the work
- Tulip long sashiko needles offer room for extended runs of stitching.
- Tulip short sashiko needles give a different grip for compact details and changes of direction.
- Bohin’s assorted hand-needle pack offers mixed lengths and sizes.
The needle eye should carry your thread comfortably. A Clover 611 ring thimble with plate can support the eye end of a suitable long needle; use controlled pressure rather than forcing it through dense layers.
Plan your supplies
DMC hemp fabric is one fabric option in this range. Test your own thread, needle and cloth combination. Thread quantity depends on the design and stitch density; check your pattern and allow for starting, finishing and a sample. Follow the product packaging and the fabric or garment’s care requirements.
