Choosing your scissors & appliqué templates
Which Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Scissors should I choose?
Look at both the blade style and overall length: the handle colours identify different models, not simply different finishes. Choose a size that suits your hand and the detail of your cutting.
- Green, 4 3/16 inch: small micro-serrated scissors for detailed fabric cutting and appliqué preparation.
- Blue, 6 inch: a medium micro-serrated option for general quilting and sewing cuts.
- Purple, 7¾ inch: the larger micro-serrated pair for broader fabric-cutting tasks.
- Teal, 4 3/16 inch: small knife-edge multipurpose scissors for precise trimming and template preparation.
- Pink, 7¾ inch: larger knife-edge multipurpose scissors for longer cuts.
The micro-serrated models help grip fabric as you cut. The knife-edge models have a different cutting edge and are useful for materials such as template plastic, freezer paper and fabric with fusible stabilisers. Check each listing for the intended uses; consider separate pairs for fabric and paper work.
Perfect Circles, leaves and ovals for repeatable shapes
Karen Kay Buckley's reusable, heat-resistant appliqué templates help you prepare consistent shapes for quilt blocks, borders, floral motifs and decorative sewing. Choose the finished shape required by your pattern and follow the pack's preparation instructions before hand or machine stitching.
- Perfect Circles: 60 templates; choose Bigger Perfect Circles for the larger 20-template set.
- Perfect Leaves and Bigger Perfect Leaves: two size ranges, each supplied as a 15-template set.
- Perfect Ovals: a 20-template set for repeat oval motifs.
These packs contain shaping templates, not pre-cut fabric pieces. Check the measurements in each product listing before choosing between the standard and Bigger sets.
Create your own appliqué templates
The four-sheet Heat Resistant Template Plastic pack lets you trace and cut shapes from your own pattern. It is writable on both sides and intended for prepared-edge appliqué. Follow the supplied pressing instructions: heat resistant does not mean suitable for every iron temperature.
Build an appliqué kit around your project
Start with the shapes your pattern calls for, then add a suitable pair of scissors. Work with a small fabric sample to check your preparation method before repeating a whole block. Complete your kit with hand-sewing needles, cotton quilting thread and quilting tools and supplies.
