Should you buy a set or individual tips?
A multi-size set is a useful starting point if you knit different projects. Compare the included needle diameters, tip lengths, cables and case: starter, small, large and complete sets contain different combinations. Individual tip pairs let you replace a favourite size or expand an existing system. Cables are usually separate unless the listing includes them. ChiaoGoo Short Combo Packs contain two tip lengths in one selected diameter, not a multi-size set.
Which interchangeable tip length suits your project?

Choose the needle diameter in millimetres to achieve your pattern's gauge, then choose the tip and cable lengths to suit the project. A cable label may describe the finished circular length with specific tips, rather than the cable alone. Read the individual listing before combining parts.
Will these tips and cables fit each other?
ChiaoGoo: match the MINI [M], Small [S] or Large [L] connection marked on the component. These are different joins; needle diameter alone is not enough, particularly across Shorties and standard ranges. An L-to-S adapter fits a Large tip to a Small cable; an S-to-MINI adapter fits a Small tip to a MINI cable. They do not work in reverse. Check the exact product and the ChiaoGoo system guide.

Metal, wood or bamboo?

Can you knit flat with circular needles?
Yes. Work across the row, turn and knit back as you would with straight needles. The cable holds the stitches, which is useful for wider shawls and blankets. For knitting in the round, match the finished circular length to the project or use an appropriate technique such as magic loop.
Useful extras for your needle kit
Add matching end stoppers to leave stitches on a cable while you use the tips elsewhere. Cable connectors extend compatible cables; keys and rubber grippers help secure threaded joins.
