Choose by feeding method as well as power. The DDL-8700 uses bottom drop feed. It is not a compound-feed walking-foot machine for heavy leather, webbing, upholstery stacks or difficult multi-layer assemblies.

Not “almost any material”. The standard DDL-8700 has a broad general-fabric range, but correct results still depend on needle, thread, presser foot, tension, motor speed and layer thickness. What exactly is the JUKI DDL-8700?
It is a professional industrial, single-needle, bottom-feed straight-lockstitch machine. Direct Sewing pairs the genuine JUKI head with a modern external servo motor and complete table workstation.
Is this the standard, A, H or L version?
This listing is the standard DDL-8700 for general light-to-medium fabrics. It is not the lightweight DDL-8700A, heavy DDL-8700H, long-stitch DDL-8700L or automatic-trimmer DDL-8700-7.
Does the DDL-8700 only sew straight stitch?
Yes. It makes a two-thread straight lockstitch and manual reverse lockstitch. It does not zigzag, make decorative stitches, overlock edges or sew buttonholes.

What materials can it sew?
JUKI's manual describes the standard model for general light-to-medium fabrics. Typical work includes cotton, linen, shirting, suiting, uniforms, many homewares and garment denim. Setup still needs to match the fabric and seam.
Can the DDL-8700 sew denim?
Yes, it is commonly used for medium garment denim. Use the right DB × 1 needle and suitable thread, reduce speed at bulky intersections and do not assume every stacked jeans hem is within the standard setup.
Can it sew leather?
Some soft, light garment leather may be manageable with the correct leather-point needle, foot, thread and testing. This is not a compound-feed leather machine for belts, tack, heavy bags or thick leather stacks.
Is it suitable for upholstery, canvas or webbing?
Only lighter work within its general-fabric range. Frequent multi-layer upholstery, canvas, webbing or difficult materials usually call for a needle-feed or compound-feed machine.
Can it sew stretch fabric?
It can straight-stitch suitable knits using the correct industrial ballpoint/stretch needle, pressure, thread and testing. It has no stretch stitches or differential feed, so an overlocker may be a better primary knit machine.
How fast is the DDL-8700?
JUKI specifies the standard DDL-8700 at up to 5,500 stitches per minute. Actual speed should be limited to suit the material, seam, operator and servo-motor setup.
Do I have to sew at full speed?
No. The supplied servo motor provides variable pedal control and an adjustable maximum-speed setting. Start slowly, then raise the limit only when the operation and operator are ready.
What is a servo motor?
A servo motor waits quietly when the pedal is released and provides variable power when pressed. It is easier to control and more energy efficient at idle than a traditional continuously running clutch motor.
Is the DDL-8700 direct drive?
No. The Direct Sewing package uses a modern external motor beneath the table and a belt to drive the machine head. Choose the DDL-7000AS-7 if an integrated direct-drive motor is important.
Does this model trim threads automatically?
No. Threads are cut manually with snips or the machine's manual thread-cutting point. The DDL-7000AS-7 adds automatic trimming.
Does it backtack automatically?
No. Reverse is controlled manually with the lever on the front of the machine head. The operator decides when and how many reverse stitches to sew.
Does it have automatic presser-foot lift?
No. Raise the foot with the hand lever or knee lifter. The separate DDL-7000AS-7FL package adds automatic pedal-controlled foot lift.
How high does the presser foot lift?
JUKI specifies 5.5mm by the hand lever. Knee-lift height is 10mm as standard and may be adjusted up to 13mm maximum by a technician, with the needle-bar clearance checked.
What is the maximum stitch length?
The standard DDL-8700 maximum is 5mm. The DDL-8700L is a separate long-stitch configuration and should not be confused with this machine.
Which needles does it use?
It uses DB × 1 industrial needles, also commonly labelled 16x231 or 134. JUKI lists #14 installed and sizes #9–18 for the standard DDL-8700. Choose point and size for the material and thread.
Can I use ordinary domestic needles?
No. Use the specified DB × 1 / 16x231 industrial needle system. Domestic 130/705 H needles have a different shank and are not interchangeable.
Which bobbins does it use?
It uses standard industrial plain-sewer bobbins appropriate to the DDL-8700 hook. Match replacements to the supplied bobbin; Direct Sewing stocks compatible aluminium options.
Does the machine require oil?
Yes. The DDL-8700 uses an automatic lubrication system and oil pan. Use JUKI New Defrix Oil No.1 or equivalent clear ISO VG7 industrial sewing-machine oil and follow the manual for level and flow checks.
Does it have a built-in needle light?
No built-in LED is specified for the standard DDL-8700 head. Direct Sewing offers table-mounted and magnetic work lamps that can be positioned over the needle area.
