Which Oliso iron makes the right Christmas gift?

Choose the Oliso TG1600 ProPlus for a full-size sewing-room iron with touch-activated auto-lift. Choose the M3Pro for compact, detailed pressing beside a machine or at a class. Both come in the Yaya Han Cherry Blossom design at Direct Sewing. If your friend already loves their iron, a wool pressing mat can be the more useful gift.

A thoughtful sewing gift starts with how someone makes. The quilter pressing dozens of little seams, the dressmaker working through garment panels and the costume maker finishing tiny details will appreciate different things. Here is a simple place to start.

The statement gift

Introducing Oliso × Yaya Han at Direct Sewing

We are welcoming the Oliso Yaya Han Cherry Blossom irons to Direct Sewing in New Zealand: the TG1600 ProPlus Auto-Lift Iron and the M3Pro Mini Project Iron. Lavender, deeper purple and pink blossoms give practical pressing tools a distinctive place in the sewing room.

Yaya Han is a costume designer and cosplayer whose work celebrates imaginative making. Her collaboration with Oliso brings that creative spirit into tools used in the quiet, repetitive stages of a project: setting a seam, shaping a collar or pressing the next patchwork unit. The finish makes the gift feel special; choosing the right format makes it useful long after Christmas.

For this launch, our Yaya Han range is these two irons. Matching carry bags, board covers and other accessories pictured in manufacturer styling are not included with them. Check the individual listing for the contents of the New Zealand version.

Yaya Han ProPlus vs M3Pro: what is the difference?

The biggest decision is the job the iron will do. A compact iron can be convenient beside the sewing machine, but its smaller tank and soleplate make it a different tool from a full-size station iron.

What does “smart iron” actually mean?

In the ProPlus, the useful feature is Oliso’s iTouch auto-lift system. It changes how you pause between presses: take your hand away and the guards raise the hot soleplate instead of you standing the iron on its heel each time. It is a corded iron, not a cordless or app-controlled device.

Automatic lift and automatic shut-off do different jobs. The first raises the soleplate; the second stops heating after a period of inactivity. The M3Pro has automatic shut-off but does not automatically lift. Neither feature replaces attentive use, a suitable ironing surface or following the supplied instructions.

Wool pressing mats: the gift that makes the setup complete

A wool pressing mat gives fabric a dense, cushioned surface for pressing seams and blocks. The wool texture helps hold pieces in position, while the material retains heat. That is particularly useful when careful pressing is part of every stage of patchwork or sewing.

Choose the mat around the pieces they press and the surface available. A small square is easy to keep nearby; a larger rectangle accommodates more of a block or panel; a long mat suits a longer ironing-board arrangement. A mat is a pressing surface, not a hot-iron rest or a guarantee that a table underneath is protected.

Oliso MultiMat or Sew Easy wool mat?

Choose Oliso MultiMat for its connecting system if you want to expand the pressing area by joining individual mats. Choose Sew Easy by the working dimensions you need: compact square, larger rectangle or long board mat. The right shape and available surface matter more than matching the brand of the iron.

Can you use steam on a wool pressing mat?

Follow the directions for your specific mat, iron and fabric. The featured Sew Easy listings allow dry or steam pressing, but heat and moisture can pass through wool. Place the mat on a stable surface suitable for both, and let it dry fully before putting it away. Never iron on top of a rotary cutting mat.

Do not leave a hot iron parked on wool, even when an auto-lift iron is raised. Oliso specifically cautions that prolonged heat can scorch the mat. Use the appropriate iron rest and the manufacturer’s resting method between tasks. Test fabric and any pressing product on an offcut first.

Three Christmas gift pairings that make sense

01 · The sewing-room upgrade

Yaya Han ProPlus + a long Sew Easy wool mat

A full-size auto-lift iron paired with a longer pressing surface is a thoughtful choice for a dressmaker or someone building a permanent sewing corner. Check that the mat fits their ironing board before ordering.

02 · The patchwork companion

Yaya Han M3Pro + a compact wool mat

Small seams and a small working area make a natural pairing. Compare the Oliso MultiMat with the Sew Easy 25cm square, depending on stock and the size of the pieces they press. The M3Pro already includes its Solemate rest, so a second rest is not an essential add-on.

03 · They already have a favourite iron

A better pressing surface + one useful small tool

Start with a wool mat that suits their space, then consider a hot ironing ruler for hems or a pressing cloth suitable for their fabric. A useful addition can be more thoughtful than replacing a tool they already enjoy.

These are gift ideas assembled from individual products, not discounted bundles or boxed sets. Add each item you want separately and check availability before ordering.

What about an Oliso carry bag or other accessories?

A correctly sized carry bag can help organise a class kit, but a ProPlus bag and an M3Pro bag are not interchangeable by assumption. Check the exact model and dimensions. If you want an Oliso carry bag that is not shown in our live collection, ask us about the current options. Empty and fully cool an iron as its manual directs before packing; an ordinary carry bag is not a hot-iron rest.

Before you wrap it: five quick checks

  1. Find out what they already use. A photo of their current iron and pressing area can tell you whether a full-size upgrade, a compact companion or a mat would help most.
  2. Match the gift to the projects. Patchwork involves many small presses; dressmaking includes larger panels and shaped seams. Costume work can involve heat-sensitive materials, so the maker still needs to follow each material’s instructions.
  3. Check the space, not just the colour. Compare iron dimensions, mat dimensions and the stable ironing surface they have available.
  4. Read what is included. The Yaya Han M3Pro includes a Solemate rest. The Yaya Han ProPlus includes a fill cup. Mats and other accessories are separate purchases.
  5. Check current stock and delivery information. Use the product page and our shipping policy before ordering for Christmas. If timing is tight, contact Direct Sewing about your items and destination rather than assuming a delivery date.

A little pressing advice to pass on with the gift

For patchwork, lift and press instead of pushing the iron back and forth across carefully cut pieces. Set the temperature for the fabric, test an offcut and follow any interfacing or fusible manufacturer’s instructions. Let the piece settle before moving it. A good iron supports a good technique; extra heat and steam are not automatically better.

Follow the supplied Australia/New Zealand iron manual for water, steam settings, filling and cleaning. Do not put starch, perfume or other additives into the tank. These irons are designed for sewing and fabric care; they are not a substitute for a heat press specified for a particular transfer process.

Oliso Christmas gift questions

Where can I buy Oliso Yaya Han irons in New Zealand?

Direct Sewing’s Yaya Han range includes the TG1600 ProPlus Auto-Lift Iron and M3Pro Mini Project Iron in Cherry Blossom. Use the product cards in this guide to compare the two models and check current NZ pricing and availability.

Is an Oliso iron a good Christmas gift for a quilter?

It can be a thoughtful gift when it suits the way they work. The ProPlus suits a main pressing station; the M3Pro suits compact, detailed pressing and a class kit. If they already like their iron, consider a wool pressing mat instead.

Does the Yaya Han M3Pro have automatic lift?

No. The M3Pro is a mini project iron with an LED work light and automatic shut-off. It includes a Solemate silicone rest. Choose the TG1600 ProPlus if touch-activated auto-lift is the feature you want.

Are the Yaya Han irons cordless?

No. Both the TG1600 ProPlus and the M3Pro are corded electric irons. The M3Pro’s compact size makes it easier to take to classes, but it still needs a suitable power supply.

Can I use a Sew Easy wool mat with an Oliso iron?

Yes, when you follow the instructions for the mat, iron and fabric and use an appropriate supporting surface. There is no need to match the mat brand to the iron. Wool mats are not hot-iron rests and do not make every tabletop safe for ironing.

Which wool pressing mat size should I choose?

Choose a 25cm square for small pieces and limited space, a 35.6cm Oliso MultiMat for a larger square with connecting options, or a 43 × 61cm Sew Easy mat for more working room. The Sew Easy 34.5 × 108cm board mat provides a longer format. Check stock and the dimensions of your supporting surface.

Are mats and carry bags included with the irons?

No. The featured Yaya Han ProPlus includes a fill cup, while the Yaya Han M3Pro includes a Solemate rest. Wool mats, carry bags, ironing boards and decorative styling items are separate unless a product listing explicitly says otherwise.

What if the mat I want is sold out?

Use the availability shown on the product page and compare another size that fits the recipient’s space. The quilting pressing tools collection includes other wool mats. Contact Direct Sewing if you need help choosing an alternative or checking a specific item.

Give them something they will reach for all year

A beautifully chosen iron can become part of hundreds of little making moments: the first seam of a summer dress, a quilt block that finally lies flat, or a costume detail ready for its next stage. Start with the way your friend creates, add a colour they love, and choose a pressing setup that fits their space.

Continue with wool mats and quilting pressing tools, browse the full ironing and pressing range, or explore our Christmas gift collection. For more ideas across crafts, read our NZ gift guide for sewists, knitters and quilters.
