Make every stitch feel right
Lay the quilt layers flat and begin basting without pulling the thread tight. Make temporary stitches that hold the layers while allowing the quilt to stay relaxed. Remove basting threads as appropriate during finishing.

No. Basting needles are longer for temporary holding stitches. Betweens are shorter needles for the quilting itself.
