Choose the finish you want

A little more presence in every stitch.

Defined quilting

Give free-motion lines, quilting patterns and stitched borders a more visible finish. Choose a close colour match for subtle texture or contrast for a stronger outline.

Decorative detail

Make appliqué edges, topstitching and machine decorative stitches part of the design. Test stitch width, length and tension on the same layers as your project.

A natural cotton look

The matte finish brings a soft, understated character to the surface. A useful choice when you want the stitching to stand out through texture rather than shine.

The fibre behind the finish

Long-staple cotton. Finished in Italy.

Sulky uses 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton for this mercerised thread. The cotton is grown in Egypt, then the thread is dyed and finished in Italy.

30wt is thicker than Sulky's 40wt cotton, giving exposed stitching a fuller appearance. Choose it for a deliberate decorative line rather than the finest, least-visible piecing seam.

Compare your colours

Classic neutrals. One confident red.

Compare the actual spool photographs below. Select an image to open that colour in the product options, and keep the shade number for an easy reorder.

Photographs are a colour guide. Screens, lighting and dye lots can affect appearance; compare thread with your fabric in natural light when an exact match matters. Check the selected colour for current availability.

Set up for a smooth stitch

A good starting point.

  • Start with a 90/14 Quilting or Topstitch needle, then adapt to the fabric, layers and machine.
  • Test on a project offcut. The upper tension may need to be loosened slightly.
  • For machine embroidery, choose a design suited to 30wt cotton and test its stitch density.
  • Sulky Cotton 30 can also be used in the bobbin when you want a matching cotton thread on both sides. Check the stitch balance before sewing the finished piece.
Thoughtful project choices

Let the sample decide.

Try the thread against your fabric before committing to a whole quilt or garment. A short sample shows how the colour, stitch size and cotton texture work together.

For overlocking or specialist techniques, follow your machine's threading and needle guidance.

Care: follow the instructions on the spool and the care requirements of the fabric and other materials in your finished project.

Good questions, clear answers

Choosing Cotton 30.

Is 30wt finer than 40wt?

No. In this cotton thread range, the lower weight number indicates a thicker thread. Sulky Cotton 30 makes a fuller, more visible stitch than its 40wt cotton.

Is this shiny embroidery thread?

It has a matte cotton finish. Choose it for natural-looking texture and visible detail rather than the high sheen of rayon, polyester embroidery or metallic thread.

What is the difference between white, off white and ecru?

These are separate shades: 1001 White (Bright), 1071 Natural (Off White) and 1082 Cream (Ecru). Use the photographs and shade numbers to compare them with your fabric.

Do I receive the whole colour range?

No. Each purchase is for one 450m spool in the colour selected. The chart shows the six colours listed individually.
