Schmetz · Denim and firm-woven needles

A stable needle for denim and firm woven cloth.

Schmetz Jeans needles are designed for denim, canvas, twill and other suitable firm woven fabrics. Their medium ball point pushes fabric threads aside, while the special blade design supports stability through thicker layers. Choose the size for the actual material and sewing thread, including the extra thickness where seams or hems cross.

Five needles in one selected size: 80/12, 90/14, 100/16 or 110/18.

Denim alterations

Test through a folded hem and a seam intersection. This reveals how the complete thickness behaves, not just the flat fabric.

Canvas accessories

Choose for suitable bags, pouches or covers when the fabric and layers are within your machine's capacity.

Firm woven garments

Use on appropriate twill or workwear cloth. Match the needle size to the construction thread before starting pockets or reinforced seams.

Before you start

  1. Confirm the required machine system and select a size for your fabric layers and thread.
  2. Switch off the machine and install the needle in the orientation specified in its manual.
  3. Sew a layered sample at a controlled speed, checking penetration, stitch balance and visible holes.

Slow down at bulky joins and let the machine feed the work. A heavier needle cannot make layers suitable for a machine that struggles to sew them.

Good to know

Why does a Jeans needle have a ball point?

Its medium ball point displaces the threads in the weave, helping it pass through firm cloth with less penetration resistance.

Is it the same as a leather needle?

No. A leather needle has a cutting point. Choose the point for the material rather than treating all thick materials alike.
