It manages the thread—not just a tension number
With ActivStitch selected, built-in sensors measure and regulate the amount of thread delivered for each stitch. This is especially useful with metallic, rayon and other specialty threads where conventional tension-only control can be less forgiving.
ActivStitch improves control; it does not replace correct threading, a suitable needle, quality thread, stabiliser or a test sample.

Enhanced Original IDT
Powered dual feed with its own intelligence
The performance icon advances PFAFF's integrated dual-feed system with its own power source. When an IDT-compatible foot is attached and the system is engaged, upper and lower fabric layers are coordinated through the seam.
A built-in sensor helps indicate when IDT should be engaged or disengaged for the selected technique. That is valuable on a machine with such a broad stitch and foot library.
Where it shines: quilt piecing, matched checks and stripes, long seams, slippery fabrics, topstitching and manageable multi-layer domestic projects.
The enhanced system is driven separately for precise, responsive fabric feed.
A broad lower-feed arrangement supports smooth, stable contact with the fabric.
The machine can advise whether IDT suits the selected stitch and setup.
IDT is integrated into the machine and swings into place behind compatible feet.

The 310 x 140mm internal workspace gives a rolled or bunched quilt markedly more freedom than a conventional domestic machine. Enhanced Original IDT supports straight-line quilting and piecing, while selectable free-motion modes lower the feed teeth for hand-guided movement.

What kind of machine is the PFAFF performance icon?
It is a flagship full-size computerised domestic sewing and quilting machine. It combines a 310mm workspace, ActivStitch thread delivery, enhanced powered Original IDT, a 10.1-inch touchscreen and deep creative stitch control. It is not an embroidery machine or an industrial sewing machine.
Why choose it if the quilt expression 725 has more stitches?
Choose the performance icon for its much larger workspace and screen, ActivStitch specialty-thread control, enhanced powered IDT, flagship lighting, larger platform and 1,050-stitch-per-minute speed. Choose the 725 when laser guidance, presser-foot recognition, lower weight and the newer 730-stitch library matter more.
What does ActivStitch do?
ActivStitch uses sensors to regulate how much top thread is delivered as the stitch forms. It is particularly useful with suitable metallic, rayon and novelty threads. Correct threading, needle choice, stabiliser and testing are still important.
Can I use normal thread tension instead of ActivStitch?
Yes. The machine supports conventional automatic tension with adjustment as well as ActivStitch thread-delivery control. The selected stitch and technique determine which system is appropriate.
What is enhanced Original IDT?
It is PFAFF's integrated dual-feed system with its own power source. With an IDT-compatible foot engaged, it coordinates fabric movement from above with the lower feed teeth. A built-in sensor helps advise when IDT should be engaged or disengaged.
How much sewing space does it have?
The working opening is approximately 310mm wide by 140mm high—about 12.2 x 5.5 inches. That gives hands, rolled quilts and bulky project sections considerably more space than an ordinary domestic machine.
How large is the screen?
The full-colour capacitive multi-touch display measures 10.1 inches / 257mm diagonally. It supports familiar gestures such as swipe, pinch and zoom and contains machine help, the User's Guide and visual stitch editing.
How many stitches and fonts are included?
It has 522 built-in stitches and six sewing fonts. The library includes utility, quilting, decorative, monogram, side-motion Maxi and exclusive PFAFF stitch techniques.
What is Stitch Creator?
Stitch Creator lets you edit individual points in a built-in 9mm stitch or create a new 9mm stitch on the touchscreen. This is sewing-machine stitch design; it does not import or sew hoop-embroidery files.
What are Maxi stitches?
Maxi stitches use side-motion technology to create decorative designs up to approximately 52mm wide. Standard forward-feed stitches have a maximum width of 9mm.
Which exclusive stitch techniques are included?
The performance icon includes floating, radiant, stacking, lace-edge and single, double and triple ribbon techniques, alongside Maxi stitches and extensive conventional sewing categories.
Does it connect to Wi-Fi?
Yes. Wi-Fi supports compatible cloud storage, stitch transfer, connected guidance and firmware updates. Current services use CREATIVATE branding, while the machine or older material may still refer to mySewnet or CreatorCue.
Does connected access mean it can embroider?
No. Online libraries may include many types of content, but the performance icon has no embroidery unit or hoop capability. It is a premium sewing and quilting machine.
Does it have an automatic needle threader?
Yes. Follow the upper threading path and use the automatic threading mechanism. Correct needle position, needle size and compatible thread are still required.
Does it cut threads automatically?
Yes. Auto-Snip cuts the top and bobbin threads at the end of suitable sewing and draws the ends to the underside where appropriate. Some specialty techniques still require manual thread handling.
Can I wind a bobbin without unthreading the needle?
Yes. The separate bobbin-winding motor allows a bobbin to be wound from a second spool while the machine remains threaded for sewing.
Can I sew without the foot controller?
Yes. Use start/stop for suitable sewing and choose a comfortable maximum with the speed slider. The foot controller is also included for conventional operation.
Is it suitable for free-motion quilting?
Yes. Choose from Dynamic Spring Foot 6D, Spring Foot and Sensormatic free-motion settings; the feed teeth lower automatically where appropriate. Foot 6A is included for Sensormatic work, while the other settings require a suitable compatible foot. Disengage IDT before free motion.
Is a quarter-inch quilting foot included?
Yes. A ¼in Quilting Foot for IDT is included, together with an edge guide, straight-stitch plate, dedicated straight-stitch bobbin case and electronic knee lift.
What does the straight-stitch plate sensor do?
When the included straight-stitch plate is fitted, the machine recognises it and prevents incompatible side-to-side needle movement. This helps protect the needle and plate during straight-stitch piecing.
Can it sew denim, canvas or bag layers?
It can handle many suitable domestic denim, canvas and bag-making projects when correctly set up. Use the right needle, thread and foot, reduce speed at bulky transitions and never force the work. Very dense assemblies and continuous heavy production require an appropriate industrial machine.
Can it sew knits?
Yes. Select an appropriate stretch stitch and fit a jersey, stretch or other suitable needle. A sewing machine and overlocker make different seams and finishes, so some knit projects benefit from both.
Is an extension table included?
Not in PFAFF's standard accessory list. An extension table may be sold separately or included in a particular promotion, so check the live Direct Sewing offer.
How large and heavy is the machine?
It measures approximately 600 x 220 x 350mm and weighs approximately 15.5kg. Use a stable sewing table, allow supported space around large projects and plan a safe lifting position.
Should I arrange a demonstration?
