A defining PFAFF advantage

The Original IDT integrated dual-feed system

Ordinary sewing machines feed fabric using feed dogs beneath the project. The Original IDT System adds synchronised feeding directly behind the presser foot.

Both layers are moved together from the top and bottom, helping reduce shifting, creeping and distortion without attaching a separate walking foot.

The IDT mechanism remains built into the machine and can be engaged or disengaged whenever the selected presser foot and technique require it.

Ideal for

  • Quilt sandwiches
  • Checks and stripes
  • Slippery fabrics
  • Stretch materials
  • Long garment seams
  • Top stitching
  • Bag construction
  • Layered home décor
Fabric control without a bulky attachment

Why integrated dual feeding makes a difference

Matched patterns

Help maintain alignment through checks, stripes and carefully positioned motifs.

Layered quilting

Move the quilt top, batting and backing more evenly beneath the foot.

Stretch fabric

Reduce shifting and stretching when combined with the correct stitch and needle.

Fine material

Improve control where light or slippery layers tend to move independently.

Top stitching

Maintain smooth feeding through long, visible rows of stitching.

Everyday sewing

Enjoy integrated fabric control without repeatedly installing a walking foot.

Large-format home embroidery

240 × 150mm creative Master Hoop included

The included hoop provides a generous maximum embroidery field of 240 × 150mm, or approximately 9.4 × 5.9 inches.

This additional width makes it possible to create elongated borders, larger florals, quilt labels, lettering combinations and decorative layouts without repeatedly repositioning the fabric.

The embroidery unit moves the hoop automatically while the needle forms each section of the design.

  • 240 × 150mm maximum field
  • Master Hoop included
  • Large decorative motifs
  • Names and monograms
  • Quilt labels
  • Appliqué embroidery
  • Border designs

Personalisation built into the machine

Two embroidery fonts with letters, numbers and symbols

Uppercase and lowercase characters, numbers and symbols can be arranged within the available hoop area and combined with decorative motifs.

The fonts are formed as true machine embroidery rather than ordinary decorative sewing stitches.

Names

Personalise towels, children’s items, bags and garments.

Monograms

Create initials for gifts, linen and home accessories.

Quilt labels

Add the maker’s name, date and a message to finished quilts.

Special occasions

Prepare the layout before stitching

On-machine embroidery positioning and scaling

Embroidery designs can be positioned within the hoop area before the machine begins stitching.

The scale function allows compatible designs to be increased or reduced by up to 20% from their original size.

Design basting creates a temporary outline around the embroidery area to help confirm placement and hold the project to the stabiliser.

  • Move the design within the hoop
  • Scale up to 20% larger
  • Scale up to 20% smaller
  • Rotate compatible designs
  • Check hoop placement
  • Baste around the design
  • View design dimensions

USB embroidery design transfer

The side-mounted USB connection allows compatible embroidery files to be transferred between a computer and the creative ambition 640.

Save personal designs to a compatible USB embroidery stick, insert it into the machine and open the design through embroidery mode.

The USB connection can also be used for supported machine software updates.

Imported designs must use a compatible embroidery-file format and fit within the machine’s maximum 240 × 150mm embroidery field.

Prepare compatible designs on your computer

Introductory embroidery software access

The creative ambition 640 package includes access to introductory PC embroidery software, providing a starting point for viewing and preparing compatible designs.

Software availability and naming may differ as PFAFF and its software platform are updated. Current activation, compatibility and download requirements should be checked at the time of purchase.

Full manual digitising from original artwork generally requires more advanced embroidery software than an introductory package.

A versatile stitch library for construction, stretch fabrics, quilting, appliqué and decorative sewing.

A complete computerised sewing machine

Practical construction and expressive decorative stitching

Remove the embroidery unit and use the creative ambition 640 as a capable everyday sewing and quilting machine.

A cleaner finish with less manual trimming

Automatic top and bobbin thread snips

Press the thread-snips button at the end of an ordinary sewing seam and the machine cuts both the upper and bobbin threads.

During compatible embroidery designs, the machine can also trim jump stitches automatically, reducing the amount of thread that must be removed by hand after embroidery.

  • Cuts upper thread
  • Cuts bobbin thread
  • One-touch sewing finish
  • Automatic embroidery trimming
  • Auto-cut compatible jump stitches
  • Reduces manual scissor work
Recommended balance for each selected stitch

Automatic upper-thread tension

The machine automatically applies a suitable upper-thread tension setting when a sewing stitch or embroidery design is selected.

This provides a reliable starting point as you move between utility stitching, decorative work, buttonholes and embroidery.

Manual adjustment remains available when specialist thread, unusual fabric or a particular decorative effect requires a different balance.

Consistent garment finishing

Automatic one-step buttonholes

Attach the supplied one-step buttonhole foot and allow the machine to sew the complete buttonhole sequence automatically.

Buttonhole density and length can be prepared for the fabric and selected button before sewing.

The package also includes a manual buttonhole foot for applications where the automatic foot is not appropriate.

  • One-step automatic operation
  • Buttonhole Foot 5 included
  • Manual Buttonhole Foot 5M included
  • Suitable for garments
  • Useful for bags and cushions
  • Repeatable results
LED-illuminated sewing area on the PFAFF creative ambition 640
Bright LED illumination improves visibility around the needle, presser foot and stitch line.
Clear visibility across the sewing area

LED-illuminated workspace

Bright LED lighting illuminates the needle, presser foot and surrounding sewing bed without producing the heat associated with traditional bulbs.

Better visibility supports accurate fabric placement, top stitching, appliqué and work on darker materials.

The generous 200mm space to the right of the needle gives projects room to move beneath the illuminated machine arm.

Smooth and accessible bobbin operation

Top-loading rotary-hook bobbin system

Insert the PFAFF bobbin from above and follow the marked threading path beneath the clear cover.

The transparent cover makes it easier to monitor the remaining bobbin thread while sewing or before beginning a longer embroidery section.

The jam-resistant rotary-hook design helps prevent loose thread from becoming trapped in the bobbin area during normal operation.

  • Top-loading bobbin
  • Horizontal rotary hook
  • Transparent bobbin cover
  • Five bobbins included
  • Bobbin winding through the needle
  • Easy cleaning access
Faster preparation before sewing

Semi-automatic built-in needle threader

Follow the marked upper-thread path, lower the threading lever and guide the thread into the mechanism.

Releasing the lever draws a loop through the needle eye, reducing the close-up work required when changing thread colours or needles.

This is particularly useful during multicolour embroidery, where the upper thread may be changed repeatedly.

Protect the needle during twin-needle sewing

Twin-needle programme and stitch-width safety

Enter the size of the twin needle and the machine limits the available stitch width to help prevent the needles from striking the presser foot or needle plate.

Stitch-width safety can also lock the machine into a centre-position straight stitch when a straight-stitch foot or needle plate is being used.

Always confirm that the selected stitch, foot and needle plate are suitable for twin-needle sewing before operating the machine.

Move the project manually when required

External feed-dog lowering

Lower the feed dogs using the conveniently positioned control at the rear of the free-arm area.

With the feed dogs lowered, the project can be moved manually for free-motion quilting, thread painting and darning.

Embroidery mode also uses automatic feed-dog lowering so the hoop can move freely beneath the needle.

  • Free-motion quilting
  • Darning
  • Thread painting
  • Creative free-motion work
  • Automatic embroidery operation
  • External control access
Room for garments, quilts and bags

200mm sewing space to the right of the needle

The creative ambition 640 provides approximately 200mm, or 7.9 inches, between the needle and the machine tower.

This gives useful room for garment sections, quilt blocks, bag panels and home décor projects.

Remove the accessory compartment to expose the free arm for sleeves, cuffs and trouser hems.

  • 200mm horizontal workspace
  • Convertible free arm
  • Built-in accessory storage
  • LED workspace lighting
  • Extension table available separately
  • Suitable for regular quilting
800 Maximum sewing stitches per minute

Complete long construction seams efficiently, then reduce maximum speed for detailed appliqué, curves and controlled top stitching.

Important information before purchasing

The PFAFF creative ambition 640 is a domestic computerised sewing and single-needle embroidery machine. It is not a commercial multi-needle embroidery machine.

Its maximum embroidery area is 240 × 150mm. Larger designs must be split, repositioned or reduced using suitable embroidery software and techniques.

The machine changes embroidery colours manually. It stops at each colour stage so the needle can be rethreaded.

USB transfer is used for compatible embroidery files. The creative ambition 640 does not have built-in Wi-Fi.

Good embroidery requires suitable stabiliser, embroidery thread, bobbin thread, needle choice and secure hooping.

The IDT System assists fabric feeding during sewing. It does not operate as a second needle or create an industrial compound-feed system.

The 200mm sewing space describes the room between the needle and machine tower. Attaching an optional extension table increases fabric support but does not increase the throat-space measurement.

Frequently asked questions

PFAFF creative ambition 640 FAQ

Is the PFAFF creative ambition 640 suitable for beginners?

Yes. Its automatic tension, built-in needle threader, graphic display and sewing recommendations make it approachable. It also offers enough capability for an owner to continue developing into embroidery, quilting and advanced garment sewing.

Can it be used as a normal sewing machine?

Yes. Remove the embroidery unit and use it as a computerised sewing and quilting machine with 150 stitches, two sewing alphabets and the Original IDT System.

What is the Original IDT System?

IDT is PFAFF’s built-in integrated dual-feed system. It feeds fabric from above in synchronisation with the feed dogs beneath the project.

Does the IDT System replace a walking foot?

For many ordinary layered-sewing and quilting tasks, the integrated IDT System provides the dual feeding normally associated with a walking foot without requiring a large separate attachment.

What is the maximum embroidery size?

The maximum embroidery field is 240 × 150mm using the included creative Master Hoop.

Is the embroidery hoop included?

Yes. The 240 × 150mm creative Master Hoop is included with the embroidery unit.

How many embroidery designs are built in?

The machine includes 101 embroidery designs covering a varied selection of sizes and techniques.

Can it embroider names and monograms?

Yes. Two built-in embroidery fonts include uppercase and lowercase characters, numbers and symbols.

Can I import my own embroidery designs?

Yes. Compatible embroidery files can be transferred using a suitable USB embroidery stick.

Does it have Wi-Fi?

No. Embroidery designs and supported updates are transferred through the USB connection.

Can the embroidery design be resized?

Yes. Compatible designs can be scaled up or down by as much as 20% from the original size.

Does it change embroidery colours automatically?

No. It is a single-needle embroidery machine. It stops at each colour stage so the user can change the upper thread.

Does it cut embroidery jump stitches?

Yes. Compatible jump stitches can be cut automatically, reducing manual thread trimming after embroidery.

Does it have automatic thread tension?

Yes. The machine automatically applies a recommended upper-thread tension setting, with adjustment available where required.

Does it have an automatic thread cutter?

Yes. The thread-snips function cuts both the upper and bobbin threads.

Can it sew without the foot controller?

Yes. Use the start and stop button together with the speed-control slider.

Can it free-motion quilt?

Yes. The feed dogs can be lowered and an embroidery and free-motion foot is included.

Can it sew stretch fabric?

Yes. It includes stretch stitches, and the Original IDT System helps control layers when used with the correct stretch or ballpoint needle.

Can it sew denim?

It can sew ordinary garment-weight denim when correctly set up with the correct jeans needle, thread and stitch. It is not an industrial heavy-material machine.

Is it suitable for a small embroidery business?

It can suit personalised gifts, monograms, quilt labels and small creative production. A commercial multi-needle machine is more efficient for frequent colour changes, larger volumes and production embroidery.

Does it include digitising software?

Introductory embroidery software access is included with the package. Creating detailed embroidery files from original artwork generally requires more advanced digitising software.
