Follow the line. Keep the detail.

Copy the lines you need for your next garment with the SewMate needle-point pattern tracing wheel. Its pointed wheel rolls along your pattern to leave a dotted trail of small perforations—useful when transferring outlines and construction lines to another sheet of pattern paper.

A shaped wooden handle and offset metal shaft give you a clear view of the wheel as you work around curves and along straight lines. A practical tool for dressmakers, pattern cutters and fashion students building a reliable pattern-making kit.

Supplied individually: 1 tracing wheel.

Trace more than the outline.

Copy pattern shapes

Follow the outline of a paper pattern to transfer its shape to the sheet beneath. Secure both layers before tracing so the original and the copy stay aligned.

Carry across construction lines

Trace dart legs, pleat lines and other drawn details as well as the outer edge. Complete your copy with a pencil, ruler or pattern curve, then add the size, grainline and any written notes.

This is a needle-point wheel, not a cutting wheel. It makes a series of small punctures rather than cutting out the pattern or drawing a continuous ink line.

How to trace a paper pattern.

  1. Prepare the layers. Put the paper you want to mark beneath your original pattern, on a protective work surface suitable for piercing. Hold the layers securely with pattern weights.
  2. Roll along the line. Guide the wheel slowly using light, even pressure. Test a short section first and use only enough pressure to leave a readable trail.
  3. Check before lifting. Confirm that the marks have transferred, then remove the original and draw in the required lines on your new pattern.

Using it with fabric: Needle points can leave permanent holes or damage delicate fabrics. Always test a scrap first. If using dressmaking transfer paper, follow its instructions and check that both the colour and marking method suit the fabric. Choose a non-piercing marking method where holes would remain visible.
