A practical general-purpose cutting size

Why 45mm is the everyday rotary cutter choice

A 45mm rotary blade is large enough to cover longer edges efficiently while remaining manoeuvrable for common curves and pattern work. It is the size many sewists reach for when one cutter needs to handle most routine cutting jobs.

Quilting and patchwork

Cut strips, squares, triangles and blocks cleanly against a suitable acrylic ruler.

Dressmaking and sewing

Follow pattern pieces, long edges and broad curves without lifting the fabric as ordinary scissors do.

Creative projects

Use it for suitable fabric, paper, cardstock, rubber sheet, film, vinyl and light leather on a proper cutting mat.

Classic simplicity that puts control in your hand

A straightforward cutter with no trigger to squeeze

RTY-2/G uses OLFA's original-style straight handle. Textured grooves support a steady grip, the slim profile is easy to guide beside a ruler, and a hanging hole makes storage convenient.

Direct, familiar grip

The handle stays firm rather than flexing or squeezing, which suits sewists who prefer a simple rotary-cutter action.

Clean, efficient cutting

The sharp circular edge rolls through suitable materials with less lifting and distortion than ordinary shears.

Easy to keep close

The slim profile fits neatly in a cutting-tool drawer, while the handle hole provides a simple hanging option.

Manual blade cover, deliberate technique

Four steps for controlled rotary cutting

The cover does not retract automatically. Open it only when the cutter is on the mat and ready to use, then close it fully as soon as the cut is complete.

1

Prepare the surface

Lay the material flat on a self-healing cutting mat and remove every pin, clip and hard fastener from the blade path.

2

Expose the blade

Pull the sliding blade cover towards you only when you are ready to make the cut.

3

Keep the blade vertical

Cut away from your body with smooth, controlled pressure and keep fingers safely behind the ruler edge.

4

Close the cover

Slide the cover fully over the blade before setting down, carrying, changing or storing the cutter.

The official OLFA operating sequence

Open the cover, cut on a mat, then cover the blade

Sharp blade safety: the manual cover helps protect the edge but does not make this cutter child-safe or injury-proof. Keep hands clear of the cutting line, work away from your body and close the cover immediately after every cutting session.
Set it up for the hand you cut with

Suitable for both right- and left-handed sewists

The blade assembly can be reversed so the cutter sits correctly against the ruler in either hand. Every nut, washer and blade component must be reinstalled in the correct order and orientation.

A particularly useful choice for...

  • Everyday quilting and patchwork cutting
  • Dressmaking pieces and broad pattern curves
  • Strips, shapes and suitable fabric layers
  • Right- or left-handed cutting
  • Sewists who prefer a slim straight handle
  • Users who want a simple manual cover

Choose another cutter or size for...

  • Tiny intricate curves better suited to 18mm or 28mm
  • Thick stacks that call for a suitable 60mm cutter
  • Users who need squeeze-handle blade retraction
  • Cutting without a protective mat
  • Hidden pins, clips, zips or fasteners
  • Any material requiring excessive force
Keep a dedicated blade for fabric: paper and abrasive craft materials dull an edge more quickly. Reserving one RB45 or RB45H for textiles helps maintain cleaner quilting and dressmaking cuts.
Two official straight-blade options

Choose standard value or longer edge life

RB45Standard OLFA 45mm tungsten-steel straight rotary blade. One RB45 blade is installed in this cutter.
RB45H EnduranceCompatible OLFA 45mm straight blade designed for longer-lasting sharpness. Sold separately.
The included blade is the standard RB45. The RB45H Endurance blade is an optional compatible replacement and is not included with this product.
Correct assembly supports safe, smooth rotation

Follow the OLFA diagram when replacing the blade

Cover the blade before loosening the assembly. Lay each component down in order and reinstall it in the correct orientation for right- or left-handed use.

  • Close the manual blade cover fully before starting.
  • Place the cutter on a stable surface rather than working in your palm.
  • Handle a replacement blade by the centre, never by the cutting edge.
  • Reinstall the blade, washer and nut in the order shown by OLFA.
  • Check that the blade rotates freely and that the cover closes completely.
