Correct product name: Madeira Spectra. The previous title's “Spectre” and “Jewel” wording is not Madeira's product name. Spectra is a flat 100% polyester holographic foil—not a conventional round metallic embroidery thread—so the design and machine setup matter.

More reflection than ordinary metallic thread

A holographic surface that changes as the light moves

Spectra reflects a broad spectrum of light from its foil surface. Wide stitches expose more of that surface, producing flashes that appear to move across the embroidery. The effect is strongest when the foil lies cleanly and is not packed into dense, short stitches.

Three-dimensional reflection

The holographic finish splits and reflects light, adding colour movement beyond a single metallic shade.

Flat foil construction

Spectra is a special effect foil, so it should feed smoothly without unnecessary drag, twisting or tension.

Purpose-built accents

Use it selectively where sparkle should become a focal point rather than filling every part of a dense design.

Design for the foil

Give Spectra space to show its holographic surface

Wide satin-stitch highlights

Use broader columns and open areas so light can travel across a visible section of holographic foil.

Decorative machine seams

Add high-impact borders, ornamental stitches and selected accents to garments, accessories and décor.

Appliqué and motif details

Outline shapes and emphasise stars, lettering, jewellery effects, celebration motifs and costume details.

Creative hand stitching

Use manageable lengths for cards, embellishment and hand-worked details without pulling the foil under high tension.

Exact fixed assortment

Six Spectra colours across eight spools

The box doubles the two most useful neutrals: Gold 525 and Silver 542. Madeira identifies Spectra by colour number rather than marketing shade names, so use the code when reordering.

Choose suitable embroidery

Open designs protect the foil and reveal more sparkle

Best choices

  • Wide satin stitches and longer decorative stitches
  • Low-density motifs with breathing room
  • Outlines, borders and isolated highlights
  • Stable fabrics with suitable backing

Avoid or test carefully

  • Very tiny stitches and tight lettering
  • Dense fills with repeated needle penetration
  • Sharp thread-path bends or excess drag
  • High tension and maximum machine speed
Set up for flat holographic foil

Reduce stress and keep the feed even

Fit the right needle

Madeira recommends a Metallic needle NM 90/14; suitable machine embroidery needles in NM 80–90 may also be used after testing.

Lower the speed

Run more slowly than standard embroidery thread so the flat foil can feed evenly without sudden jerks.

Reduce tension

Spectra should not be held under high tension. Start gently and adjust only from a test stitched on the actual project layers.

Watch the thread path

Position the spool so the foil unwinds cleanly without catching, folding or twisting before it reaches the needle.

Care for the complete project. Follow the Spectra packaging and the lowest care limit among the fabric, stabiliser, bobbin thread and trims.

Questions before you stitch

Madeira Spectra 8013 FAQs

Is it called Spectra, Spectre or Jewel?
Madeira's official product name is Spectra. “Spectre” is a spelling error, while “Jewel” is informal retailer wording describing the jewel-like holographic effect.
Is Spectra ordinary metallic embroidery thread?
No. Spectra is a flat 100% polyester holographic foil. It reflects light differently and needs more careful design, speed, tension and thread-path choices than a conventional round embroidery thread.
How much is included?
The box contains eight 100m Snapspools, giving 800m in total. Gold 525 and Silver 542 are supplied twice; the other four colours are supplied once.
Which colours are in the box?
The assortment contains Pink 513, Red 515, two Gold 525, Blue 533, two Silver 542 and Green 557.
Which embroidery designs work best?
Madeira recommends wide satin stitches and designs with low stitch density. Open decorative elements expose more foil surface and reduce repeated needle damage.
Which needle should I use?
Madeira recommends a Metallic needle NM 90/14. Some machines and fabrics may also work with an NM 80–90 embroidery needle, but always test the full project combination first.
Why should speed and tension be reduced?
The flat foil should feed evenly without being stretched, jerked or pulled tightly through the thread path. Lower speed and gentler tension reduce stress and help preserve the holographic surface.
Can Spectra be stitched by hand?
Yes. Madeira specifies Spectra for machine and hand stitching. Use manageable lengths and avoid sharp pulling or excessive tension that could crease or damage the flat foil.
Turn selected stitches into light

Use Spectra where maximum sparkle matters most

With six holographic colours, doubled Gold and Silver, and 800m of special-effect foil, Madeira article 8013 is designed for wide, open accents that flash and shift as the embroidery moves.
