More thread, fewer interruptions

The Maraflex choice for serious stretch sewing

This larger cone brings Maraflex's specialist stretch performance to workrooms that sew regularly. The long length reduces spool changes and helps keep matching thread available across batches, garments and recurring alterations.

Production-friendly length

Keep sewing through longer runs with ten times the length of the 150m household spool.

Flexible straight seams

Achieve a familiar straight-stitch appearance while allowing the finished seam to move with the fabric.

Made for garment work

A strong choice for alterations, activewear, underwear, knit garments and small production rooms.

Consistent fine finish

Micro Core Technology supports smooth, controlled sewing and a clean seam appearance.

Micro Core Technology

High elasticity without a bulky elastic-thread look

Maraflex is made from 100% polybutylene terephthalate using Gütermann's Micro Core Technology. Its fine, consistent construction gives the seam useful stretch while retaining the polished look of a quality sewing thread.

Elasticity throughout the seam

Using Maraflex above and below allows the full lockstitch seam to extend more evenly.

Designed for closing and decorative seams

Suitable for construction seams and visible straight stitching on compatible stretch garments.

Clean-running construction

The continuous microfilament construction is designed for reliable sewing without fibre fly.

Commercial versatility

Where Maraflex 1500m earns its place

Underwear

Fine, flexible stitching for close-fitting garments where ordinary rigid seams may restrict movement.

Necklines, cuffs and bands

Create neat straight stitching in areas that must stretch as the garment is put on and worn.

Alteration workrooms

Keep a practical volume of core shades ready for repeat repairs and stretch-garment alterations.

Elastic woven fabrics

Suitable for light to medium-weight woven fabrics containing elastane after testing the project layers.

Best-results setup

Give Maraflex room to stretch

The thread setup is central to the result. Maraflex needs to be used on both sides of the stitch and sewn without excessive tension so the finished seam can extend.

1. Thread both sidesUse Maraflex in the needle and bobbin. Ordinary bobbin thread can restrict the designed seam elasticity.
2. Lower the tensionBegin with low thread tension and adjust only enough to form a balanced stitch on the project layers.
3. Set the densityAim for four stitches per centimetre, approximately a 2.5mm stitch length, then test the completed seam.
  • Fit a Jersey, Stretch or Super Stretch Needle in size NM 70 to 80.
  • Wind the bobbin evenly without pulling or pre-stretching the thread.
  • Use a suitable cone stand and smooth thread path when sewing on a domestic machine.
  • Test through the same fabric, interfacing and seam layers used in the garment.
  • Check the seam relaxed and gently stretched before beginning production.

Common questions

Gütermann Maraflex 1500m FAQs

What is the difference between this 1500m cone and the 150m spool?

Both are fine Maraflex threads designed for highly elastic seams. This article 716936 is the industrial 1500m cone, making it better suited to frequent sewing and production. The 150m version is a convenient household spool for smaller projects.

Can I use the 1500m cone on a domestic sewing machine?

Often yes, provided your machine can follow a correct thread path from a large cone. Most household machines need a stable external cone stand placed behind the machine. Test the feed and tension before sewing the garment.

Do I need Maraflex in the bobbin too?

Yes. Use Maraflex as both the needle thread and bobbin thread for the intended seam elasticity. Ordinary bobbin thread can limit how far the complete seam can stretch.

Which needle and stitch length should I use?

Use a suitable Jersey, Stretch or Super Stretch Needle in size NM 70 to 80. Aim for four stitches per centimetre, approximately a 2.5mm stitch length, and test on the actual fabric layers.

Should I reduce the thread tension?

Yes. Use as little tension as practical while still producing a balanced lockstitch. Excessive tension can reduce the thread reserve that lets the seam extend.

Does Maraflex replace an overlocker?

Maraflex can form elastic straight-stitch seams without an overlocker or coverstitch machine. It does not cut the seam allowance or automatically finish a fraying raw edge.

Is Maraflex the same as shirring elastic?

No. Maraflex is a fine elastic machine-sewing thread for flexible seams. It is not the thick elastic thread used in the bobbin to gather fabric.

What do No. 120 and Tex 38 mean?

They are industry size references for this thread. No. 120 identifies the ticket size and Tex 38 describes the thread's linear density. These are specifications, not the number of metres supplied.

How much thread is included?

Each purchase includes one 1500m cone in the colour selected on the product page.
