Support that stays behind your stitching.

Give embroidery a lasting foundation with non-woven cut-away backing. Trim the excess after sewing while leaving support beneath the design, especially where the fabric needs help holding its shape.

250 pre-cut squares, each 16cm × 16cm. Choose white or black for your project.

Where it works best

Medium to heavier fabrics

A useful choice for embroidery projects needing a substantial backing. Match the stabiliser to the fabric, design density and finished feel.

Ongoing support

Unlike tear-away backing, the material beneath the stitching stays with the project. Consider cut-away when movement or stretch makes temporary support insufficient.

Prepare a consistent workflow

Keep the same backing, thread and stitch settings for repeat work once a sample has given you the result you want.

How to use it

  1. Check that the backing covers the embroidery frame with enough extra material to be held securely. Do not stretch the fabric while hooping.
  2. Stitch a sample using your chosen fabric, design and thread. Adjust the backing layers or settings before working on the finished piece.
  3. Support the embroidered area and carefully trim away surplus backing with scissors. Leave the material beneath the stitches in place.

This is cut-away backing, not a water-soluble topping. Do not pull it off or tear through the stitched area. A heavier backing can change the drape of fine fabrics, so check the completed sample first.

Good to know

Does cut-away wash out?

No. The backing under the stitches remains in the project. Choose a water-soluble product when the technique requires all support to be removed.

Can I use it on towels?

Use a backing suited to your towel and design underneath, and a separate water-soluble topping if needed to stop stitches sinking into the loops.
