Metric diameter is the primary reference. The join changes after 5.00mm, so check both the needle size and the [S] or [L] code before choosing a cable.

Match the join letter, not just the brand name
FORTE tips use ChiaoGoo's standard Small and Large interchangeable join system. Parts carrying the same letter are directly switchable, including matching ChiaoGoo TWIST, SPIN and SWIV360 cables.
Small [S] join
Choose an [S] cable for tip sizes US 2 to US 8, which covers 2.75mm through 5.00mm in this listing.
Large [L] join
Choose an [L] cable for tip sizes US 9 to US 15, which covers 5.50mm through 10.00mm in this listing.
Do not force a mismatch: an [S] tip does not screw directly onto an [L] cable, and an [L] tip does not screw directly onto an [S] cable. ChiaoGoo adapters can expand some combinations, but they are separate accessories and are not included.
13cm tips make circulars from about 60cm and longer
ChiaoGoo labels its interchangeable cables by the cable length itself. Add two 13cm tips to estimate the complete tip-to-tip circular length.
Not for a 40cm circular: ChiaoGoo advises that 13cm tips are too long to make a comfortable 40cm / 16in circular. Choose 10cm tips with a suitable short cable when a 40cm finished length is required.
