Choose the thread for the seam—not just its strength.

Shop upholstery thread in New Zealand for furniture, cushions, bags and compatible leather or vinyl work. Compare bonded nylon, polyester and poly/cotton constructions, from finer furnishing seams to bolder industrial topstitching.

Choose upholstery thread by fibre, size & application

Bonded nylon, polyester or poly/cotton?

Bonded nylon ranges such as Nylbond and Strongbond are useful for abrasion-prone seams on suitable industrial equipment. Serafil offers continuous-filament polyester with a different finish. Terko Satin and Rasant-Oxella combine a polyester core and cotton wrap for a more textile-like appearance. Choose the construction for the finished seam and its environment.

Choose a thread size your machine can handle

Tex and ticket numbers are different sizing systems. In general, a higher Tex number means a heavier thread; ticket numbering must be read within the manufacturer's range. Compare the listed specification, needle requirement and machine capacity. A large industrial cone does not become domestic-machine compatible simply by putting it on an external stand.

Light furnishing seams or heavy visible stitching?

Rasant 75 is the finer poly/cotton option here for selected furnishing work and lighter seams. Rasant-Oxella and heavier Terko Satin sizes create more visible stitching. Test the complete fabric, lining, foam or reinforcement stack with the chosen needle, thread and tension before committing to the job.

Indoor upholstery is different from exposed outdoor work

For cushions, covers and furniture left in sunlight or weather, start with outdoor and marine thread and confirm the particular thread's UV and exposure specification. Do not assume every strong nylon or polyester thread has the same weather resistance. Match your needle system and presser feet to the machine as well.
