Choosing the right measuring tool
When should I use a tape measure?
A flexible tape follows body measurements and curved surfaces. Retractable tapes pack neatly into a sewing or knitting kit. Compare overall length, units and readability; an extra-long tape is useful when the measurement exceeds a standard tape’s reach.
What does a seam or hem gauge do?
A small gauge helps repeat a short measurement such as a seam allowance, hem depth or fold. Sliding gauges retain a setting; fixed gauges offer marked reference points. Choose a scale and shape that are easy to read against your fabric.
Quilting and expanding gauges
A quarter-inch quilting gauge checks a common patchwork seam allowance. An expanding gauge spaces repeated positions such as button placements. These are specialised measuring tools, not substitutes for a long pattern ruler or rotary-cutting ruler.
Keep your measurements consistent
Lay the tape without stretching it and check from the correct zero mark. Recheck a worn or damaged tape against a reliable ruler. Only press directly on a gauge if its manufacturer specifically allows it—metal, plastic and transparent tools have different heat limits.
