What does a sewing machine seam guide do?
A seam guide gives the fabric edge a reference to follow as you stitch. Set its distance from the needle to suit your seam allowance or topstitching width, then test on an offcut. Guide the fabric gently without forcing it against the attachment. A guide helps with consistency; it does not replace correct machine setup or fabric handling.
Magnetic seam guides: reposition without screws
Compare the G20, Mini G30 and Large MG25873 magnetic sewing guides. They attach to a suitable magnetic metal surface and can be repositioned when you change seam widths. Not every machine bed or needle plate is magnetic. Check your machine’s guidance on magnetic accessories, make sure the guide sits securely, and leave the needle and presser foot clear.
Screw-on seam, zip and hem guides
The G8 three-corner guide provides different guiding edges for straight and curved work and comes with two thumb screws. The SA538 domestic seam guide adjusts horizontally and fits the compatible Brother models listed on its product page. Specialist options include a zip attachment guide and the Juki 40177371 coverstitch hem guide for MCS1500 and MCS1700QVP machines. Check screw spacing, mounting position and the supplied fittings; these are different attachments for different jobs.
Drop-down and suspended industrial guides
Compare the Type 1 GB1, Type 2 GB2 and suspended GB6 guides for compatible industrial machines. These support edge-guided topstitching without relying on a magnetic base. The Type 2 includes flat and roller guiding surfaces. The GB6 also offers roller and solid guiding options, and its mounting requires a horizontal slot at the back of the machine. Check the individual fitting requirements rather than choosing by brand alone.
Stick-on stitch guides and quilting bars
Clover’s 7708 Six-in-One Stitch Guide uses an adhesive sheet for suitable metal or plastic surfaces. It is an alternative to magnetic or screw-mounted guides; follow Clover’s fitting instructions. The Brother F016N / SA132 quilting guide is a separate bar for evenly spaced rows. It needs a compatible guide opening in the foot holder or walking foot; the walking foot is not included.
